Japa is the repetition of a mantra (the name of God).
Japa being an accepted mode of approach to Divinity in all religions, it is the most commonly practised sadhana and is followed universally.
Japa Yoga is accepted as a distinct Path of Yoga (mode of approach to Divinity) by itself and can lift the practitioner to Divine Consciousness.

 Japa Sadhana
Japa is regarded as the most efficacious method of spiritual practice.
We, as Sadhakas, seekers, are as important an element in the practice of Japa Sadhana as the principle of God, the Deity, and the constitution of the letters of the Mantra.
So Japa, according to this definition of Patanjali at least, is not merely a mechanical recitation of a Name or a formula, but includes also a simultaneous contemplation on the meaning thereof, though many protagonists of this form of Yoga tell us that even a mechanical repetition of the Name has its own beneficial effect.
