Isra and Mi'raj - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Isra and Mi'raj (Arabic: الإسراء والمعراج) refer to two parts of a journey the Islamic prophet Muhammad took in one night.
It is believed to have been followed by the Mi’raj (Arabic: المعراج), his ascension to heaven.
Isra (Arabic: الإسراء) is an Arabic word referring to what Muslims regard as Muhammad's miraculous night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem — specifically, to the site of Masjid al-Aqsa — alluded to in Surat Al-Isra 1:

 the Message Continues
The Prophet's (pbuh) Isra and Miraj was meant to demonstrate to Jews and to Christians that he, Muhammad (pbuh), was now God's Messenger on earth and had, as a consequence, inherited spiritual authority over the multi-dimensional legacies of previous Prophets.
The second important theological significance of Al-Isra and Miraj is to be found in the fact that he, Muhammad (pbuh) led the congregational prayers at Masj id al-Aqsa in which participated all the Prophets of God.
Our interpretation of Miraj as a religious experience of the transcendental world is reinforced when we examine the time and date when the Prophet's (pbuh) Miraj took place and the position it occupies in the sequence of spiritually important dates which follow it in the Islamic calendar.

Speaking on the importance of the Isra and Miraj (Journey and Ascent of the Prophet), the President cited verses from the Noble Quran to note that the Miraj ascent was a great miracle that the Almighty had blessed upon the Holy Prophet.
The President noted that Isra and Miraj, and performing the five daily prayers which were ordained on that holy night, signified the stature that Islam gave to human beings.
He noted that daily prayers were made obligatory on the night of the Miraj miracle, while all the others pillars of Islam were set forth upon the Ummah while the Holy Prophet was in either Mecca or Medina among his followers.

According to Muslim tradition, it was during the Prophet's miraj that, after conversations between the Prophet and Moses, the five daily prayers observed throughout the Muslim world became canonical.
As part of historical revisionism, some Orientalists, such as John Wansbrough, and Likudnik/Zionist historians have opined that Muhammad's (S) night journey to Jerusalem – the Isra' and Mi'raj, one of the principal foundations of Jerusalem's sanctity in Islam – was a later invention aimed at accounting for the Qur'anic verse 17:1.
But to the Muslims it contained the Rock hallowed by the Prophet Muhammad's (S) Isra' and Mi'raj (the Prophet's nightly journey to Jerusalem and ascension to heaven).
