Is disenchantment the end of religion? - Christopher L. Walton
The institutional and intellectual traditions of the rationalized religions seem most vitally relevant to a disenchanted world in their capacity to link the personal quest for meaning and cosmic order to a discipline that serves the religious ethic of brotherliness.
Is it so clear, after all, that the world has been disenchanted and that religion — insofar as enchantment belongs to religion — has irremediably ceded its mystery to the clarity of science and the control of technology?
Its practitioners may reject the world in principle, but in practice they must find workable compromises with the world.

 Why are some papers good?
One area in which intellectualization’s consequences are particularly important is the realm of the political.
Prior to intellectualization, the solutions to problems now addressed by scientific analysis and calculation were drawn from metaphysical realms like religion.
Scientific analysis and calculation may answer more accurately a great many of our questions about the world we live in, but since it cannot answer our most important questions, it leaves us spiritually unfulfilled and devoid of the faith by which we were once consoled.

Ibn Rushd [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd, better known in the Latin West as Averroes, lived during a unique period in Western intellectual history, in which interest in philosophy and theology was waning in the Muslim world and just beginning to flourish in Latin Christendom.
Within the walls of the University of Paris, a group of philosophers came to identify themselves with the Aristotelian philosophy presented by Ibn Rushd, particularly certain elements of its relation to religion.
Just fifteen years before his birth, the greatest critic of Islamic philosophy, al-Ghazzali (1058-1111), had died after striking a deadly blow to Muslim Neoplatonic philosophy, particularly the work of the great philosopher Ibn Sina (980-1037).

L.L. Bernard: An Introduction to Social Psychology: Chapter 27: Primary and Derivative Attitudes and Ideals
Every great evolving religion of which we have a record has advanced from magic and ritual towards rational social controls as guiding principles in just that degree to which intellectual analysis has taken the place of primary attitudes in the understanding of the explanatory content of these religions.
This means that the members of such institutions must be taught to think in terms of abstract or derivative adjustments, made on the basis of scientific ideals of collective behavior, instead of on the basis of traditions and beliefs coming down unmodified from the primary group life and emotional behavior of primitive times.
This latter possibility will be realized if there is sufficient intellectual analysis of relationships and of obligations or if the desire sufficiently objectifies means and ends.

 Does Psychoanalysis Intellectualize the Emotions?
What is certain, however, is not such passions as love or hate, but the resulting passion of ignorance which their signs produce.
For this reason, psychoanalysis is not a place you go to think about or intellectualize your emotions, but to articulate the ignorance of a passion: an emotion that simultaneously asserts and denies its own comprehension.
It was psychoanalysis which reintroduced an interrogation of the passions into a medical discourse by taking seriously their irreality, not merely as the expression of a fiction or imaginary, but as a guide to a real repression in the life of the individual.

The charge of over intellectualization stems from the traditional tendency to presume that the rationality of holding a person responsible depends upon a judgment that the person in question has satisfied some set of objective requirements on being responsible (conditions on efficacy or metaphysical freedom) and that these requirements themselves are justifiable.
The central criticism Strawson directs at both consequentialist and traditional merit views is that both have over-intellectualized the issue of moral responsibility, and it is this criticism that has rendered his view so influential in subsequent work.
Strawson, by contrast, maintains that the reactive attitudes are a natural expression of an essential feature of our form of life, in particular, the interpersonal nature of our way of life.
