1 in Faith: A Christian Bible Study - Inerrancy
And fourth, arguments in theology for the infallibility or inerrancy of the Bible were developed after the Reformation to resist Catholic claims of infallible teaching authority and also methods for historical and literary analysis of the Bible.
Arguments about evolution and biblical authority for slavery divided churches and led to a revised view of inerrancy among some factions that claimed only the original manuscripts of the Bible to be without error.
Hodge argued that Calvinist theology supported the inerrancy of Bible, which was taken to mean that the Bible is free from error of fact in every way including science and history as well as ethics and doctrine.

Bible Inerrancy: A Belief Without Evidence
Miller set out to explain (to an audience already predisposed to agree with him) why he believed in the inerrancy of the Bible, but all he did was show that he believes in Bible inerrancy...
An entire section of his article was devoted to a discussion of "the biblical claim for inerrancy," but I have to disagree with his contention that the Bible claims inerrancy, because it doesn't.
Unfortunately for Miller's confidence in Bible inerrancy, these are all very big ifs, none of which he could actually prove if his life depended on it.

The actual doctrine of the inspiration of the Bible by the Holy Spirit and the inerrancy of its words arose during the 19th century in response to the development of biblical criticism, scholarly studies that seemed to challenge the divine origin of the Bible.
Many confess that the Bible is the full and sufficient guide in all matters of faith and practice; others view the authority of the Bible in the light of tradition, or the continuous belief and practice of the church since apostolic times.
Bible, also called the Holy Bible, the sacred book or Scriptures of Judaism and of Christianity.

Inerrancy: Is the Bible Infallable, Inerrant, Free of Error?
Inerrancy is a major part of the belief of conservative Christians.
Other Christians restrict the term only to refer only to moral, spiritual and religious truth in the Bible.

Inerrancy and Infallibility of the Bible
Inerrancy regarding the Bible is rather different than what a lot of people think it is! Skeptics can easily show many differences in wording between different (English translations of) Bibles.
Therefore, they claim that Inerrancy is not true of the Bible.
Inerrancy is the view that when all the facts become known, they will demonstrate that the Bible in its original autographs and correctly interpreted is entirely true and never false in all it affirms, whether that relates to doctrine or ethics or to the social, physical, or life sciences.

Encyclopedia article on Biblical inerrancy [EncycloZine]
Postmodern Christians would argue that the doctrine of inerrancy is easily subjected to certain abuses, such as the idea that the translations of the Bible or the surviving ancient texts are inerrant.
Similarly, the belief that the authors of the books of the Bible were inspired by God does not necessarily mandate a corresponding belief that the Bible is a 100% accurate record of historical events, nor a belief that the opinions and beliefs of the various authors never found their way into the sacred texts.
This view was ably expressed in 1978 in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, an interdenominational statement of evangelical scholars and leaders to defend Biblical inerrancy against the trend toward liberal and neo-orthodox conceptions of Scripture.

Why I Believe in the Inerrancy of the Scriptures
Consequently, the doctrine of inerrancy applies to the biblical text in our day as well--insofar as the Bible has been accurately translated.
Our reasoning faculties must be sufficiently competent to consider the evidence of inspiration and inerrancy, applying the law of contradiction and other self-evident rules of logic in order to ascertain whether the Bible is consistent with a supernatural origin.
In order to hold the conviction that the Bible is the word of God, one must also hold that the Bible is inerrant--for such is the claim made throughout the Bible for itself.

The Inspiration, Inerrancy & Authority of the Holy Scriptures
All of our other distinctive beliefs and practices grow and flow out of this distinctive belief, including our belief in the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible itself.
Inerrancy means that the Bible is entirely true and trustworthy and wholly without error in all that it affirms, whether those affirmations concern doctrinal, practical, moral, historical, geographical, or scientifical matters.
At best, they believe that Scripture is only true and trustworthy in matters of faith and practice, not in its historical, geographical, or scientifical teachings.

 The Modern Inerrancy Debate
As a result, the Bible is often made to serve the doctrine of inerrancy, a move which runs counter to one of the primary tenants of the Reformation, that Scripture should be the primary authority for the faith and practice of the Christina community, not doctrines.
The modern concept of inerrancy, and it is a modern concept, arises out of Calvinistic based fundamentalism as it blended a basic position in predeterminism (predestination) with a narrow rationalism to defend Scripture (the "Battle for the Bible") against the excesses of scientific positivism and naturalism.
All this simply says it might be more profitable for the church to leave the debates about inerrancy aside and concentrate more on hearing the living and active word of God speak in the community of Faith.

Inerrantists believe that these statements in combination yield a doctrine of the Bible which has been labelled "inerrancy." (See Rich's posting for a good explanation of the doctrine.) The doctrine of inerrancy is as much a part of the revelation contained in the Bible as is the deity of Christ or the reality of forgiveness.
Likewise, it is possible for us to take by faith the doctrines of inspiration and inerrancy: the Word wholly of God and at the same time of man, preserved from error to reveal the truth to us in no uncertain way.

 How the ICBI Started
At that conference we would also work through and release a set of affirmations and denials on the inerrancy of Scripture and claim that there is no real biblical authority without biblical inerrancy and that the church was bound to deteriorate to the degree it rejected the inerrancy of the Bible.
Furthermore, we, who felt God wanted us to stand up for the traditional, inerrancy view of Scripture and call our churches and organizations to be consistent with the statement on scripture in that organization's founding documents, were often attacked as troublemakers and told to be quiet or to go away.
We see the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy (ICBI) Statement on Inerrancy as being a landmark church document, which was created in 1978 by the then largest, broadest, group of evangelical protestant scholars that ever came together to create a common, theological document in the 20th century.

Inerrancy’s relationship to authority is closely related to the question of how the Bible views itself.
The Battle for the Bible by Harold Lindsell and the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy (ICBI) in October 1978, which produced the “Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy.” Both of these events were in response to what many evangelicals feared was a weakening of the authority of Scripture.
What is more, because Scripture could not “qualify” as a genuine Cartesian foundation on its own, the doctrine of inerrancy was required to legitimate it as a viable alternative to Protestant liberalism’s experiential foundation.

Biblical inerrancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biblical inerrancy is the belief that the Bible is without error.
In its most stringent form, Biblical inerrancy holds that the Bible is literally true in every word, at least in the original autograph (the first texts written in the original Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic).
The theological basis of the belief, in its simplest form, is that as God is infallible, the Bible, as the word of God, must also be free from error.

 Is the Bible Inerrant?
Inerrancy as taught in many churches focuses too much attention on the Bible and not enough on what it teaches.
Inerrancy is unnecessary and problematic, and deserves to be challenged for the sake of faithful Christians everywhere.
As will be seen, inerrancy is not at all essential to maintaining the inspiration, authority, and infallibility of the Holy Scriptures, and can even become a hindrance.

 inerncy
The basis for the doctrine of biblical inerrancy is located both in the nature of God and in the Bible's teaching about itself.
Just as biblical authority only became part of Protestant confessions in the sixteenth century to counter the idea that tradition is the supreme authority of he church, so the doctrine of biblical inerrancy was only explicitly formulated to counter explicit denials of the Bible's truthfulness.
This is as true of inerrancy as it is of the doctrines of the Trinity, or of justification by faith.

 Modernism and Biblical Inerrancy
The doctrine of the inspiration, inerrancy and authority of the Bible rests upon the doctrine of God.
Since Jesus authored all the Scriptures by His Spirit, and since He Himself taught the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible, then the Bible is a book that is to be used to disciple the nations.
Before we examine the many biblical passages and doctrines that clearly teach that the Bible is God& inspired, infallible Word, it should be noted that Christianity stands or falls upon biblical inerrancy.

 Traditional Biblical Inerrancy
In the case of the biblical god Yahweh, the Bible claims that truth and honesty are features of his nature.
Hence, the traditional fundamentalists are the ones who are preaching what the Bible actually teaches on this subject, and the new fundamentalists teach a view that is both illogical and contrary to what the Bible plainly says about how "the word of God" was channeled through "inspired" men.
As I will be showing in upcoming articles on the new fundamentalists, this position is as impossible to defend as the traditional view of biblical inerrancy, but at least the traditionalists have a semblance of logic on their side.

At that conference we would also work through and release a set of affirmations and denials on the inerrancy of Scripture and claim that there is no real biblical authority without biblical inerrancy and that the church was bound to deteriorate to the degree it rejected the inerrancy of the Bible.
Another ICBI book, The Foundation for Biblical Authority, edited by James Boice and also published by Zondervan, answered the Roger's book and is an excellent survey for the pastor and academic layperson to come to a solid understanding of the debate and the historical arguments of the church for the Bible's inerrancy.
Biblical inerrancy is one of the theological issues that is being dealt with by the International Church Council, which is in many respects the spiritual successor to the now defunct ICBI.

 The Error of Biblical Inerrancy
Biblical inerrancy means that since the human authors and editors of the Bible were led or influenced by God, it follows that the Bible is "the Word of God." It also implies that the writings have been thereby supernaturally protected from error, and that therefore scripture is entirely trustworthy and authoritative.
Not everyone, however, accepted inerrancy — as we found out in the case of the Roman Catholic Church.
Today all but the most extreme Jewish and Christian groups recognize the complicated and varied origins of the Bible, and that it contains statements that in any other literary work would be considered erroneous.

Deep calls to Deep - A New Kind of Christian - Blog: Inerrancy
Inerrancy doesn't concern itself with such figures of speech--unless you want to define "inerrancy" in a way that inerrantists DON'T. The fundamental issue in the inerrancy argument goes to the question, "what is the Bible?" Is the Bible God's Word TO us, or is it man's word ABOUT God?
That believers until the 20th century had little to say about inerrancy in no way suggests that they didn't believe it; rather, I'd suggest that no one had the temerity, until the 20th century, to call himself a "Christian" and doubt it!
My point about the mustard seed is to say that Jesus speaking in that way made no "error" at all; rather, he was using a figure of speech that would be understood by His hearers.
