Incarnation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The doctrine of the Incarnation of Christ is central to the traditional Christian faith as held by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and most Protestants.
The final definitions of the incarnation and the nature of Jesus were made by the early church at the Council of Ephesus and the Council of Chalcedon.
In the Incarnation, the divine nature of the Son was perfectly united with human nature in one divine Person.

 incarnation on Encyclopedia.com
Incarnation is found in various phases of Greek religion, in which the human body of a god was a disguise or a temporary means of communication.
Among western cultures the most widely accepted belief in incarnation is in that of Jesus, held by Christians to be God in the flesh, partaking wholly both of divinity and of humanity, except in so far as human beings have a propensity to sin.
In early times the idea was expressed in the belief that certain living men, often kings or priests, were divine incarnations.

The means, according to Scripture, whereby the incarnation came about is the virginal conception (a more accurate description than virgin birth) of the Son of God by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary (Isa.

 Rebecca Writes: Incarnation
Incarnation means to make flesh, and it's used to refer to God the Son taking on a human nature--or becoming a human being--while continuing to be God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
We know from other places in scripture that this resurrected body is a "spiritual body," but it is still a true body.

 The Incarnation
One approach used by modern writers speaks of the incarnation as being based on a "functional" union between God and Jesus: that is, Jesus is God in the sense that he acts for and as God, and that God is present in him so intimately that what happens to Jesus actually happens to God.
The Incarnation deals with the relationship between Jesus and God.
Based on the accounts in the Bible, it is clear that his followers had the experience that in Jesus they were encountering God.

 Understanding the Incarnation
The early church considered the Incarnation to be one of the most important truths of our faith.
It is also the answer to the most important and relevant question in the universe: "Who is Jesus Christ?" The answer revealed by the truth of the Incarnation is: Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man in one Person.
Thus, Jesus is fully God since He is God the Son incarnate.

 Incarnation by J.I. Packer
The doctrine of the Trinity declares that the man Jesus is truly divine; that of the Incarnation declares that the divine Jesus is truly human.
A crucial event for the church& confession of the doctrine of the Incarnation came at the Council of Chalcedon (A.D.451), when the church countered both the Nestorian idea that Jesus was two personalities—the Son of God and a man—under one skin, and the Eutychian idea that Jesus&; divinity had swallowed up his humanity.
The Incarnation, this mysterious miracle at the heart of historic Christianity, is central in the New Testament witness.

KUYPER ON THE INCARNATION OF THE WORD
Kuyper called the idea that the incarnation in itself was not a humiliation for the Son of God, "the hobbyhorse of the Ethical movement." He perceives therein pantheistic elements.
A young, budding theologian is critically analyzing one of Kuyper's ideas and is comparing it with the manuscripts of the Greek church fathers and the dogmas of the early church.
Kuyper then ended his oration of 1917 with a reference to the incarnation of the Word, and made mention of an unfathomable depth existing between the church of Christ and modernism.

The orthodox understanding of the incarnation
For example, within 60 years after the Nicene council affirmed the full deity of Christ another church council, the Council of Constantinople, had to deal with Apollinarianism, which went overboard on the side of Christ's deity and was not doing full justice to His humanity.
This is one area of theology where orthodoxy is very meticulously defined and has been accepted by all major traditions without serious challenge since the fourth century.
Nevertheless, in the century that followed, Arianism and several other Christological heresies attempted by subterfuge and intrigue to gain a foothold the church.

Is the Incarnation a Pagan Concept?
As with the doctrine of the Trinity, detractors have claimed that Christian belief in the Incarnation was stolen from paganism.
The differences between avatars and God Incarnate are massive.
Yet one could perhaps see the demigods and avatars as vague shadows of a past revelation of the Incarnation to "righteous pagans", even as the triads, threefold deities and the Hindu trimurti may be the remnants of an ancient revelation of the Trinity.
