Topic: Imamate

 The fundamentals of Imamate theory
Imamate leadership) belonged to the Messenger of Allah (peace is upon him), who handed it over to Ali, by the command of Allah in a pattern ordained by Allah.
The Imamate is the most exalted of affairs after prophet hood, as it is one of the most esteemed of the obligatory duties from Allah.
The Imamate school of thought presents as evidence of the ‘infallibility’ of the members of the Prophet’s household, the following Quranic verse: “ Allah wishes only to remove evil deeds and sins from you, O members of the family (of the Prophet) (peace be upon him).” (Ahzab) i.e.

 CHAPTER TWO
Even though accepting the Imamate of Hassan Askari will not necessarily lead to the acceptance of the existence of a son for him, the belief in that is based on the necessity of the continuation of the divine Imamate till the day of Resurrection, and on the necessity of inheriting it vertically.
This is what led his brother Ja’far bin Ali to claim the Imamate after him and to call the Imamate Shiites to follow him as a successor to him.
Among them were those who held to the principle-- ‘the Imamate not being in two brothers’ and were forced to assume the existence of an illusory son for Abdullah, whose name is said to be Muhammad and he is hidden, but will appear in the future.

 Foreword
Imamate is One of the Fundamentals of Faith
Thus since Imamate is the covenant of Allah we should not decide it by consultation or by counseling, because it does not relate to the covenant of Allah but it pertains to the affairs of the people.
Imam Ali says, "Actually for the Imamate and guidance of the people the most suitable is he, who is the ablest of all the people and who has the greatest knowledge of the Divine Commandments".

The theory of Imamate in the face of challenges
A group of them believe in the Imamate of Isma'il, or his son Muhammad, and transferred the Imamate to his progeny—These are the Ismailites.
The main reason for the doctrine of halting the Imamate with Imam Kadhim believed by the Musawites, and their non-acceptance of the Imamate of his son Rida, was the various narrations on the Mahdism of Kadhim and the inevitability of his coming back to life after his death.
THE POSITION OF MEMBERS OF The greatest problem faced by the Imamate philosophers in the process of constructing the doctrine of divine Imamate, of the Imams of the ‘Ahl al-Bayt’ lies in the position of the members of the Prophet’s family themselves on the doctrine of infallibility, as they were vehemently rejecting it.

 Momineen.com - Carney:The Necessity of Imamate
For the Shi’as of ‘Ali>, Ima>mate is the pole and center of religion.
Ima>mate is Divine Guidance made manifest in human form; the Ima>m is the supreme theophany ( tajalli>) and highest locus of manifestation ( maz}har) which God creates for Himself.
Without him, the true gnosis cannot be obtained; for this reason the Prophet has said that one who dies without knowing this Figure, without knowing this Ima>m, dies a death of ignorance.

 Imamate and Leadership
Imamate and caliphate are inseparable, in just the same way that the governmental functions of the Messenger of God cannot be separated from his prophetic office.
After the death of the Prophet, the Imam was entrusted with the guardianship of his accomplishments and the continuation of his leadership, in order to teach men the truths of the Qur'an and religion and ordinances concerning society; in short, he was to guide them in all dimensions of their existence.
However, in the course of Islamic history, political power did become separated from the spiritual Imamate, and the political dimension of religion was separated from its spiritual dimension.

 CHAPTER SIX
In the same manner, they were thinking of the Imamate of Muhammad bin Ali after his father, but when he died in the lifetime of his father, they recognized the futility of what they thought.
What is the difference, if I say: ‘the Imamate is one of the five laws (Shariah)’ from one who accept ‘bada’ in prayer and fasting and the remaining four laws since the authority for the four is one, that is the Imamate.
We would also find that the Shiites generally do not subscribe to the theory of Divine Imamate, which was believed by some theologians secretly, and attributed to the members of the Ahl al-Bayt who were constantly dissociating themselves from it in reality and in the open.

The Correct Definition of Imamate, according to Muslims
Any person laying claim to the Imamate although such an individual is not of the family of the Holy Last Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) through either of his noble grandsons, The Imamain Sayyidain, Hadrat Imam al-Hasan and Hadrat al-Husain [millions of Salaams be upon them], has laid a claim of falsehood.
The conditions of the Imamate are actually based on the Divine Permission from Allah Ta’ala, and commissioned from Sayyidina Rasulullah (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam), the Holy Last Messenger.
Their intention is to destroy anyone who does not believe or acknowledge their Imamate, and to put out the light of pure, unadulterated Islam.
http://www.ummah.com/Al_adaab/ahlibayt/imamate.html

 Occultation
Since the Imamate can only pass to the eldest living son of the former Imam, the Imamate passed from 'Ali al-Hadi not to his eldest son Muhammad, who had died before him, but to al-'Askari, who was the elder of the two sons who had outlived their father.
Since Muhammad, the eldest son of 'Ali al-Hadi, died during the lifetime of his father, and since the Imamate should belong to those who survive the death of their father, it had not been transferred to Muhammad.
They may have accepted the Imamate of al-'Askari because he was the eldest son after the death of their father, it had not been transferred to Muhammad.

He was alive at the time of Muhammad's death, and he had the best title to become Muhammad's heir because of the group feeling attaching to paternal uncles (al-'Abbas being the paternal uncle of Muhammad).
Some of them transferred the imamate after Abu Hisham to his brother 'Ali and then to 'Ali's son al-Hasan.

 PART THREE: THE IMAMATE
Imam 'Ali publicly declared the Imamate of Hasan and Husayn, and the latter declared the Imamate of his son 'Ali Zayn al-'Abidin, and similarly each Imam was appointed by the previous one.
We believe that the Imamate is one of the fundamentals of Islam ( usul ad-din), and that man's faith can never be complete without belief in it.
The Imamate must continue uninterrupted, although the Imam may live hidden among mankind until Allah wills that he reappear on a certain day, a Divine mystery known only to Him.

 Imamate
This Divine Communication clearly shows that because of 'Ali's appointment to thee Imamate the religion was perfected, the bounty; and favour of Allah completed, and Islam approved by Allah.
Verily, Allah, He is your Lord and God; then after Him, His Prophet, Muhammad, who is addressing you, is your Master, then after me 'Ali is your Master and your Imam, according to Allah's command.
Then after him the Imamate will continue through my descendants begotten by him till the day you meet Allah and His Prophet.

Imam Jaffer (A.S.), a brief look into his Life
This was done by applying Ja'far's theory of the Imamate to the actions of the Imams of the House who came before him, for example, Ali's acceptance of the first three caliphs, the abdication of Hasan, the inactive attitude of Husayn and the quiescent policies of Zayn al-'Abidin and Muhammad al-Baqir.
In this poetry there is clear evidence for the withdrawal of al-Sayyid, may God have mercy on him, from the beliefs of the Kaysaniyya, and for his holding the doctrine of the Imamate of al-Sadiq, peace be on him.
This Imam, who must be a descendant of the Prophet through Ali and Fatima, derives his exclusive authority, not by political claims but by Nass, that is, explicit designation by the previous Imam, and he inherits the special knowledge of religion coming down in the family from generation to generation.

 Imamate
In Islamic terminology al-imamah (Imamate) means 'universal authority in all religious and secular affairs, in succession to the Prophet' [1].
The question of Imamate and caliphate has torn the Muslim community apart and has affected the thinking and philosophy of the different groups so tremendously that even the belief in Allah (at-tawhid) and the prophets (an-nubuwwah) could not escape from this divergence of views.
As the Imamate and caliphate is generally accepted as the successorship of the Prophet, the above questions cannot be answered until a decision is made on the basic characteristics of a prophet.

Answering-Ansar.org :: Imamate; The Perfection of Deen
This verse makes it clear Allah (swt) did not declare the perfection of religion, the completion of his bounties and his satisfaction until Hadhrath Ali (as)'s Imamate was formally declared at the end of the Prophetic mission.
The Prophet (saaws) was referring to absolute religious leadership, through which deen can be identified, it started at Ghadhir Khumm when the Prophet (saaws) declared before a gathering of 124,000 Sahaba "Of whomsoever I am Maula (Master) Ali is his Maula".
What is crucial is the verse which descended following the sermon declaring Ali (as)'s Wilayat.

The consensus of the men around Muhammad and the men of the second generation shows that (the imamate) is necessary according to the religious law.
It is their obligation to see to it that (the imamate) is set up, and everybody has to obey (the imam) in accordance with the verse of the Qur'an, "Obey God, and obey the Messenger and the people in authority among you."
If we, now, investigate the wisdom of Qurashite descent as a condition (of the imamate) and the purpose which the Lawgiver (Muhammad) had in mind, (we shall find that) in this connection he did not only think of the blessing that lies in direct relationship with the Prophet, as is generally (assumed).

 Shi'a: The Imamate
However, the eleventh Imam (the tenth Imam to succeed 'Ali), Hasan al-Askari, died without a son, and the Shi'ites were thrown into disarray.
The Imamate is the central aspect of Shi'ite Islam and what principally distinguishes it from orthodox or Sunni Islam.
A grand total of eleven Imams succeeded 'Ali (ten in non-Shi'ite histories), passing the Imamate down to their sons in hereditary succession.

Imamate is the method by which a society is guided - it is the faithful custodian of the religion that holds its main duties to be guidance and upbringing.
1- It is impossible that the Holy Prophet had left the issue of imamate without specifying and appointing his successor.
If so, then why does some Islamic sects, other than the Shi`a, blame the Shi`ites for adhering to the Household of the Holy Prophet (s.w.)?

3.That they possess the insight and wisdom which will lead them to choose the person who is most fitting for the Imamate and who is the most upright and knowledgeable with respect to the management of the offices of administration.
These persons were Umar ibn Khattab, Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, Usayd ibn Hudayr, Bashir ibn Sa'd, and Salim the freed-slave of Abu Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with them.

 Zaydiyyah
Unlike the Imamis and Isma'ilis, who believe that the Imamate is handed down through a particular line of descendants, the Zaydis believe that anyone in the house of Ali is eligible for the Imamate.
The Zaydis reject the doctrine of the Hidden Imam and the return of the Mahdi.
However, in 964 a second Zaydi Imamate was established; this lasted until the twelfth century.

His work, Ithbat al-Imama seeks to affirm the imamate from the perspective of rational and philosophical arguments instead of establishing it on the basis of the Qur’an and hadith exclusively.
Al-Naysaburi does not mention al-Hakim by name in his treatise but refers to him as the ‘commander of the believers’ and feels compelled to comment on ‘the time in which we live’.

 Imamate
Imamate can also encompass the stations of Risalaa (Messengership), Nubawaa (prophethood), Walia (nearness to Allah and guidance to mankind) and Khilafa (government).
The Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) was an Imam, but he did not hold the position of Khilafa, we know from Al-Quran that he did hold the positions of Risaala, Nubuwaa and Walia.

Oman Philately Network: "State of Oman" and "Dhufar" rebel issues
Even after the imamate ceased to exist in Oman's interior and the Imam and some of his followers established their organisation in exile, their movement actually never laid claim to Dhufar.
This was certainly true - the only flaw in the argument being that these rebels were not followers of the Imam, and that PFLOAG was as opposed to the Imam and an "Oman Imamate State" as it was to the Sultan and the Sultanate.
The 20th century Imamate in the Omani Interior (which lasted from 1913 to 1955) never extended to Dhufar.

The pilgrims on returning to heir homes must have felt compelled to narrate this strange story; and thus the Shi'as throughout the Muslim world came to know, without any formal proclamation, that Imam Zayn al-'Abidin was their divinely-appointed Leader and Guide.

According to Zaydi political theory, Ali, Hasan and Husayn are the first three rightful Imams ; after them, the imamate is open to whomever of their descendants establishes himself through armed rebellion.
In Yemen, a Zaydi state was established in 893 by a Hasanid who had originally been invited to mediate between quarrelling Yemeni tribes.
A succession of occupations by foreign dynasties beginning in the tenth century occasionally forced the Zaydi imamate to retreat northwards; however, the imamate survived until the death of its last imam in 1962.

The Imamate was the state built up by the imams of Dagestan during the early and middle of the nineteenth century in the Eastern Caucasus, especially in Chechnya and Dagestan, to fight against the invasion of the Russian Empire.
Shamil, the third imam of Dagestan, strengthened the Imamate the most and lead it until his capture by the Russians in 1859.

 The Imamate Strategy
Another interesting and noteworthy point is the claims made by the infallible Imams which underline their Imamate strategy.
Such remarks reveal the contentions of the Imams, which are clearly seen in the lives of Imam Baqir (AS), Imam Sadiq (AS) and Imam Reza (AS).
In some cases, we come across certain claims and remarks in the statements of the infallible Imams which are unusual.
