Ignorance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despite the admonition in some faiths that ignorance is bliss, most religions are adamant that it does more harm than good.
Secular philosophies generally condemn ignorance as illustrated in the classic story, A Christmas Carol where the Ghost of Christmas Present reveals to Scrooge the childlike personifications of the major afflictions of the world, want and ignorance, and the fact that the latter is more harmful.
In a society with a strong hierarchy or caste system, ignorance of the concerns of those one does not work or deal with directly may aid labour specialization, reduce jealousy and dissent, and otherwise serve the interests of social harmony.

Catholic Culture : Document Library : Ignorance—Invincible and Vincible
Invincible ignorance removes culpability for the sins against faith, merely vincible ignorance diminishes culpability (sometimes to the point of being venial), crass or supine ignorance will affect culpability for them little or not at all, and hard hearted, affected ignorance will increase culpability for them.
For those who have had their culpability for sins against faith removed or diminished to the point of veniality, they are not mortal sins and thus will not of themselves deprive one of heaven.
Failure to embrace the Christian faith (infidelity), total repudiation of the Christian faith (apostasy), and the post-baptismal obstinate denial or willful doubt of particular teachings of the Catholic faith (heresy) are objectively grave sins against the virtue of faith.

Since enlightened ignorance surpasses knowledge and wisdom, it is not knowledge or wisdom, which is to say that it is a form of ignorance.
Passive ignorance is abhorrent to almost everyone, and people spend the first 20 or so years of their lives in the classroom in order to immunize themselves against it.
The type of knowledge (and ignorance) that we are considering embraces the fundamental truths of existence, which is to say that it addresses the nature and meaning of reality.

SUMMA THEOLOGICA: Does ignorance cause involuntariness?
For then, ignorance does not induce one to wish this to be done, but it just happens that a thing is at the same time done, and not known: thus in the example given (Objection 3) a man did indeed wish to kill his foe, but killed him in ignorance, thinking to kill a stag.
Accordingly, we must take note that ignorance has a threefold relationship to the act of the will: in one way, "concomitantly"; in another, "consequently"; in a third way, "antecedently." "Concomitantly," when there is ignorance of what is done; but, so that even if it were known, it would be done.
But it is not every ignorance that deprives one of this knowledge.

 Undressing Ignorance
And, while Felman’s argument targets ignorance not as a lack of knowledge (I would agree with her on this point) she does characterize unknowing in a negative light as "an active refusal of information." This refusal she attributes to the student as an internalized resistance to knowledge, to say, literature, for example.
She sees a parallel between the relationships of teacher and student and analyst and analysand whereby a student’s ignorance is likened to an analysand’s "repression" or "resistance" to knowledge.

 Language Log: Deep-seeded ignorance
Ignorance can be planted deep and thus have deep metaphorical roots, but deep-seated ignorance would have to be ignorance cut with a lot of room in the crotch, or maybe ignorance sitting in a badly-designed armchair.

And in terms of the current ordinary-language meaning of the words involved, "deep-seeded ignorance" makes sense, while "deep-seated ignorance" doesn't.

Marketers can take advantage of rational ignorance by increasing the complexity of a decision.
Rational ignorance is a term most often found in economics, particularly public choice theory, but also used in other disciplines which study rationality and choice, including philosophy (epistemology) and game theory.

Pluralistic ignorance occurs where the majority of individuals in a group assume that most of their others are different in some way, whilst the truth is that they are more similar than they realize.
