Icon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is due to the fact that iconography is rooted in the theology of the Incarnation (Christ being the eikon of God) which didn't change, though its subsequent clarification within the Church occurred over the period of the first seven Ecumenical Councils.
The function and degree to which images are used or permitted, and whether they are for purposes of ornament, instruction, inspiration, or treated as sacred objects of veneration or worship, thus depends upon the tenets of a given religion.
Eastern Orthodox further believe that "a clear understanding of the importance of Icons" was part of the church from its very beginning, and has never changed, although explanations of their importance may have developed over time.

The Iconic and Symbolic in Orthodox Iconography
Aside from the presence of iconography in traditional Orthodox societies and Churches, a presence which survives, though precariously, to this very day, as we have demonstrated, a glance at one very important period in the history of the Orthodox Church also attests to the importance of the iconographic tradition.
The subject of iconography precipitated the longest-running (approximately 120 years) and most violent of the theological debates to shake the internal life of the Orthodox Church: the so-called iconoclastic controversy.
Bishop Auxentios holds a Doctorate in Orthodox liturgical theology from G.T.U.  Jehovah's Witness Iconography
That emphasis on uniformity and univocality stands in provocative contrast with the Society's selective celebration of cultural and ethnic diversity in, for example, its contemporary iconographic representations of life in paradise and in the routine inclusion in Society publications of photographs taken at Witness assemblies and conventions around the world.
But that apparent austerity of Witness culture contrasts sharply with the Watchtower Society's lavish and pervasive iconography in which Witness ideology is visually inscribed.
To express this global/local, transnational/provincial tension another way: not only are Jehovah's Witnesses historically an "American religion" in that they originated in late nineteenth-century America, but Witness leadership--especially at its geographic and ideological center--is clearly overrepresented by an Anglo-American gerontocracy with American English as its privileged language of discourse.
