Literary Encyclopedia: Old English Homilies (Homily)
Other homilies, such as most of those written by Wulfstan and most anonymous ones, are not based on a specific Gospel passage, and follow their opening with exhortations to good behaviour and repentance, which are often accompanied and reinforced by descriptions of bad behaviour and its dangerous consequences for a Christian at Judgement Day.
In a homily designed to explain the meaning of the Gospel reading, like most of those written by Ælfric and some anonymous homilies, this opening is followed by a detailed interpretation of the Gospel text, often drawing out its implications for Christian doctrine and conduct.
Most of the Old English homilies which survive are in manuscripts whose place of writing and place of use are not known, although some of surviving homiletic manuscripts have been identified as coming from major Anglo-Saxon monastic centres such as Canterbury, Rochester, Worcester and Exeter.

 Lancashire's Intro to Homilies
All 33 homilies were published unsigned because they derive their authority, not from any individual or even any group of bishops and chaplains, but from the Church of England itself and of course the living monarch.
The first homily, "A Fruitfull Exhortation to the Reading and Knowledge of Holy Scripture," taught that every person was personally and entirely responsible for her or his faith and character, and that the only way of carrying out that responsibility was through reading and listening.
Published in 1547 and extended under Elizabeth in 1563, the homilies (the third pillar) were designed to be read from the pulpit of every parish in the realm: they explained the articles of belief, justified them from the Bible and the Fathers of the Church, and set doctrine on many public issues.

Although preaching was one of the direct and immediate results of the Reformation it was difficult to obtain satisfactory preachers, owing to the incapacity of some, and the attachment of others to the medieval religion.

Bishop López: The homily might be inspired by the readings and applied to the mystery being celebrated, or inspired by the mystery or sacrament being celebrated -- for example, when baptism or confirmation is administered -- illuminating it with the help of the readings to introduce the faithful more profoundly in what they are living.
It is not necessary to be a great orator or to use great resources -- homily means conversation -- but it is a question of assimilating and making one's own what one is going to say, to transmit it through witness.
Bishop López: This description isn't necessary when it comes to liturgical preaching, which has its model in the holy fathers.

Homilies - definition of Homilies in Encyclopedia
Sermons are occasionally known as homilies, especially in the Roman Catholic Church and similar traditions.
Sermons are usually, but not always, delivered in a house of worship, most of which have a pulpit or ambo, an elevated architectural feature from which sermons are given.
The word "sermon" comes from a Middle English word which was derived from an Old French term, which in turn came from the Latin word sermō; ("discourse").
