Holy Orders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Holy Orders in the modern Roman Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Anglican, Assyrian, Old Catholic, and Independent Catholic Churches, includes three degrees: bishop, priest, and deacon.
Recently the ordination of Gene Robinson to the order of bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire, and the near ordination of Jeffrey John (was to be ordained Bishop of Reading) in the Church of England have caused a stir in the Anglican Communion, as not all provinces approve of such actions.
Eastern Orthodox bishops can, and frequently do, grant recognition to the holy orders of converts who were earlier ordained in the Roman Catholic church (though there is much debate in the Orthodox Church about this); that is part of the policy called church economy.

Episcopal ordination—fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders
The sacrament of Holy Orders is conferred by the laying on of hands followed by a solemn prayer of consecration asking God to grant the ordinand the graces of the Holy Spirit required for his ministry.
ACRAMENT OF Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry.

 Holy Orders
Holy Orders are the several different degrees of ordained ministries recognized by the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican churches.
The outward and visible sign of the sacrament is the imposition of hands by a bishop, sometimes accompanied by the transmission of an object or objects associated with the order, such as a chalice and paten for a priest.
The emergence of a third order can perhaps be identified, however, in the figures of Timothy and Titus, recipients of the letters that bear their names, who had authority over bishops and deacons.

Our Catholic Faith - Sacrament Of Holy Orders
Holy Scripture attributed the power to the Apostles and their successors (Acts, vi, 6; xvi, 22; I Tim., v, 22; II Tim., i, 6; Tit., i, 5), and the Fathers and councils ascribe the power to the bishop exclusively.
Besides the ceremonies used in the Roman Church, the people approving the candidates by acclamation, the hands of the deacon and the head and hands of priests and bishops were anointed with the sign of the Cross.
The Pontifical directs that ordinations to sacred orders must be held publicly in the cathedral church in presence of the cathedral chapter, or if they be held in some other place, the clergy should be present and the principle church, as far as possible, must be made use of (cf.

On Extreme Unction and Holy Orders
Holy Orders is a Sacrament by which bishops, priests, and other ministers of the Church are ordained and receive the power and grace to perform their sacred duties.
The Church possesses and confers on her pastor, the power of orders and the power of jurisdiction; that is, the power to administer the Sacraments and sanctify the faithful, and the power to teach and make laws that direct the faithful to their spiritual good.
To receive Holy Orders worthily it is necessary to be in the state of grace, to have the necessary knowledge and a divine call to this sacred office.

 Holy Orders - Home Page
The guidance and mysterious unction of the Holy Spirit, the Maker of the priest, are clearly visible in the beauty, vigor, and unction of the instructions, prayers, and ceremonies which give to it its form and substance.
Holy Church can fulfill her mission of bringing salvation to the world only through priests; but today, as in the days of Christ, "the harvest is great, but the laborers are few" (Luke 10,2)
The priesthood is the heart of the Church; but the priest comes from the people.

 Holy Orders
The sacrament of holy orders is conferred in three ranks: bishops, priests, and deacons.
Bishops (episcopoi) are those who have care of multiple congregations and have the task of appointing, ordaining, and disciplining priests and deacons.
Let all such practices be utterly done away, and let the deacons remain within their own bounds, knowing that they are the ministers of the bishop and the inferiors of the presbyters.

 EIPS - Holy Orders
HOLY ORDERS is an expression altogether unknown to the Sacred Scriptures, and the thing it represents would have been not less a novelty to the Apostles themselves and their disciples.
The Council of Trent, however, nothing daunted, declares that by " Holy Ordination, bestowed by words and external signs, grace is conferred, and that none ought to doubt that Orders constitute one of the Seven Sacraments of the Holy Church." These conclusions are, as usual, fortified by anathema.
Among the votaries of Rome, Apostolical succession means this-all the Popish Priests now on the earth, have been ordained by bishops; all the bishops now on the earth, have been chosen by the Pope, and episcopally ordained by his authority.

Holy Orders - The Minor Orders
The historical development of these orders was not the same throughout the Church and, moreover, their functions underwent considerable modifications according to the exigencies of the times.
For this reason special orders were introduced by the Church, and men were ordained by a sacred rite for the worthy discharge of these offices.
Not more than two minor orders may be received on the same day; nor is it allowed that tonsure and a minor order be received by the same candidate on the same day.

Catholic Update - Sacrament of Holy Orders by Thomas Richstatter, O.F.M., Th.D.
The fact that we are all priests is not a new idea—it is as old as the Scriptures: "...Let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1 Pt 2:5).
The Sacrament of Holy Orders enables the priest to speak in the name of the whole community.
He is ordained to say prayers to which we can all respond "Amen." Because of Holy Orders the priest "possesses the authority to act in the power and place of the person of Christ himself" (Catechism, #1548).

In the Roman Catholic Church the ordination to the priesthood is considered a sacrament, conferring on the recipient the power to celebrate the eucharist and marking the priest with an indelible character.
Priests who are members of religious orders are called regular clergy (see monasticism).
In 1967 the diaconate was restored as an independent order with its own ministry (e.g., preaching, baptizing, distributing Holy Communion), and married men began to be received into this order.
