Himalaya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Himalaya is a mountain range in Asia, separating the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
The Salween, Mekong, the Yangtze and the Huang He (Yellow River) all originate from parts of the Tibetan plateau that are geologically distinct from the Himalaya mountains, and are therefore not considered true Himalayan rivers.
The Indo-Australian plate continues to be driven horizontally below the Tibetan plateau, which forces the plateau to move upwards.

Curing Himalayan Fever: Looking Beyond the Big Mountains - GoNOMAD
Perhaps it's the allure of the tallest mountains in the world, the ancient cultures and the fascinating religions.
In addition, I visited and volunteered with many hard-working organizations dedicated to insuring that Tibetans still in Tibet and in exile have access to their traditions, education and livelihood.
And of course, the plight of the Tibetans has caused many in the West to become aware of the area's political, religious and cultural issues, and prompted another wave of Himalayan Fever.

The Himalaya, roof of the world, is a magic place where the magnificence of the world’s highest mountains is mirrored in the rugged beauty and unique culture of the people who live in their shadow.
From the earliest accounts, Mt. Kailash was believed to be the centre of the universe with the River systems of the Indus, the Brahmaputra, and the Sutlej all flowing from its snowy ridges and maintaining the courses which they had followed prior to the forming of the Himalaya.
This is the principal mountain range dividing the Indian subcontinent from Nanga Parbat in the west, the range stretches for over 2,000-km to the mountains bordering Sikkim and Bhutan in the east.

How the women of Seduwa came to have a different dream is part of the story of a larger vision that of conserving the rich natural and cultural heritage of the world's mountains.
Working from these basic principles, the Mountain Institute formed long-term partnerships with the governments and people both in the Makalu-Barun National Park and Qomolangma Nature Preserve.

The uplift of the mountains have given birth to Indian Monsoon.
During this time, the Tibetan Plateau was also pushed up by 2000 to 3000 meters.
As the elevation of the mountains reached above the permanent snowline (the altitude where the snow falls round the year) it was transformed as the house of so-called 'eternal snow and ice' forming the Himalayan glaciers.

News in Science - Ancient Himalayan mountains even older - 23/09/2003
The world's highest mountains may be almost nine times older than previously believed, according to U.S. geologists.
Gehrels and his colleagues surmise that the ancient granite seeped up - still molten -into faults between low-lying blocks of fractured ancient crust nearly a half-billion years ago.
The faults and zircons show that there was indeed some sort of early uplift of mountains; zircons washed off those mountains and were trapped in sediments below.

The Himalayas [This Dynamic Earth, USGS]
Among the most dramatic and visible creations of plate-tectonic forces are the lofty Himalayas, which stretch 2,900 km along the border between India and Tibet.
This immense mountain range began to form between 40 and 50 million years ago, when two large landmasses, India and Eurasia, driven by plate movement, collided.
Because both these continental landmasses have about the same rock density, one plate could not be subducted under the other.
