Hillel II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hillel II, also known simply as Hillel was a Jewish communal and religious authority, circa 330 - 365 CE.
In an autograph letter to him, Julian assured him of his friendship and promised to ameliorate further the condition of the Jews.
Temporarily to relieve the foreign congregations, Huna ben Abin once advised Rava not to wait for the official intercalation: "When you are convinced that the winter quarter will extend beyond the sixteenth day of Nisan declare the year a leap-year, and do not hesitate" (R. 21a).

Hillel's importance as the embodiment of the religious and moral teachings of Judaism and as the restorer of Jewish Scripture exegesis is expressed in a most significant manner in the words of lamentation uttered at his death: "Wo for the meek one!
Hillel's sayings are preserved partly in Hebrew, the language of the school, partly in Aramaic, the language of the people, or, as it is said in Ab.
That the love of God had also a central position in Hillel's conception of religion needs not to be proved; this position had long been assigned to it in Judaism—since the Scripture passage in which this precept is joined immediately to the confession of the unity of God (Deut.

 Hillel and Shammai
For example with regard to the remarriage of an aguna, whose husband is not known with certainty to be alive or dead, the view of Hillel (and most of his colleagues) was that she can remarry even on the basis of indirect evidence of the husband's death.
While Hillel and Shammai themselves did not differ on a great many basic issues of Jewish law, their disciples were often in conflict.
Sixteenth-century kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria (the “Ari”) said that not only are both the words of the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel enduring on the conceptual level, but each has its time and place on the pragmatic level as well.

Hillel II did not institute a new method of calculating the sacred calendar, he merely published the secret method of calculations used by the Calendar Court to calculate the days on which to observe God's observances and festivals and he established a fixed sacred calendar for future generations.
Moreover, all biblical and secular events concerning the Jews and the early church during this period confirm the validity Hillel II's calculations and its use of the visible new crescent as the beginning of the sacred month.
Not only does astronomy confirm the Hillel II calendar, but Jewish history easily confirms the unbroken succession of festivals calculated by using the visible new crescent as the first day of the month all the way back to the Day of Atonement in 30 A.D..

The Hillel calendar can thus be seen for what it was and is. It was part of a sustained attack on the doctrines and religious observance of the Church and the people of God, by an apostate system.
Indeed such argument proves that the Hillel or modern Jewish calendar is incompatible with the word of God and the correct observance of His Sacred calendar.
The progression from the original pure biblical calendar to the rabbinical calendar introduced from Babylon, firstly under Rabbi Hillel II in 358 CE, was rather long winded as the traditions had to be entrenched to justify the gradual changes.

Hillel II had no authority of any kind to place the Passover into the winter and to place the entire Feast of Tabernacles into the summer!

Hillel's calendar repeatedly placed the Passover into the winter and the entire Feast of Tabernacles into the summer.

Both of these things violate basic requirements for a correct calendar: Passover must be in the spring, and all of the Feast of Tabernacles must be in the autumn.

That is precisely why, for the benefit of Jews scattered around the world following the destruction of the Temple in AD70, the patriarch Hillel II, in the 4th century, set out the present Jewish calendar to begin Abib as near as possible to the spring equinox.
In the course of time, Jewish calendar makers began to use the Metonic Cycle to regulate the sacred calendar and after a few changes the following seven years in the cycle, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 19th, were declared to be leap years with 13 months each.
