High priest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Christianity a high priest could sometimes be compared with the Pope in the Roman Catholic Church, a Patriarch in an Eastern Orthodox Church, or a Primate in an Anglican or Episcopal church; but it is traditional to refer only to Jesus as the one high priest of Christianity.
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a high priest is an older male who has been faithful in the church and may have served in the bishopric and other important callings.
In Shinto, a high priest, called a Guji, is usually the highest ranking priest (Kannushi) in a shrine.

Moses' father-in-law was priest of Midian, doubtless the chief or high priest.
Besides the regularly prescribed dress of the priests, the high priest must wear the robe of the ephod, the ephod, the breastplate and the mitre or head-dress (Leviticus 8:7-9).
In Leviticus 4:3,5,16; 6:22 he is called "the anointed priest." Three times in the Pentateuch he is spoken of as "great priest" or "high priest" (Leviticus 21:10; Numbers 35:25,28).

Zadok (Hebrew: Tzadok meaning "Righteous") was the Israelite High Priest of the tenth century BCE.

The high priest was responsible for the Tabernacle, its daily offerings and functions and also its regular Feasts, three times in the year: at Passover, at Pentecost and at Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (which was followed by a week of joy in the Feast of Tabernacles), as seen from Leviticus chapter 23.
On the Day of Atonement, it was uniquely the high priest's responsibility to take the blood of the sacrificed goat into the Holy of Holies on behalf of all God's people, for forgiveness of their sins.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Priest
The priest is the minister of Divine worship, and especially of the highest act of worship, sacrifice.
The bishop is truly a priest (sacerdos), and even a high-priest; he has chief control of the Divine worship (sacrorum antistes), is the president of liturgical meetings; he has the fullness of the priesthood, and administers all the sacraments.
Hence ordinarily the priest was not isolated, but was regularly attached to a definite church or connected with a cathedral.

Christ Our Great High Priest, by Martin Luther
The adornment of Aaron and his descendants, the high priests, was of a material nature, and they obtained for the people a merely formal remission of sins, performing their office in a perishable temple, or tabernacle.
In the Old Covenant, the priest with his sacrifices and sprinklings of blood effected merely as it were an external absolution, or pardon, corresponding to the childhood stage of the people.
According to Leviticus 16, the high priest must once a year enter into the holy place with the blood of rams and other offerings, and with these make formal reconciliation for the people.

Did the High Priest really enter the Holy of Holies with a rope tied around his ankle?
In a Bible study covering the feasts, a question arose regarding the cord tied around the high priest during Yom Kippur when he would enter the Holy of Holies.
As long as the priests outside could hear them tinkling, they would know the High Priest was still alive.
The Bible is not explicit about this eventuality, but the practical solution supposedly contrived by the ancients was to tie a cord around the priest's ankle just in case.

The high priest under the law was but a man; the great "High Priest over the house of God" is God-man, "Immanuel, God with us," the eternal "Son of the Father, in truth and love," having taken our nature into union with his own divine and glorious Person.
The high priest under the law was a sinner--but the great "High Priest over the house of God" is spotless, without sin, "holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens."

Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

The apparent literal meaning of the pagan title Pontifex Maximus is Maximum Bridge Builder, denoting the Roman Caesar was the highest priest, the supreme bridge between the gods and man, because the Caesars also claimed to be a god on Earth.
