 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2004.11.36
The modern distinction between "myth", "legend", and "folklore", first advanced by the Brothers Grimm, is viewed as equally unsatisfactory, and has no more basis in ancient taxonomies than do modern anthropological definitions of myth itself (it will thus potentially confuse some readers that C. uses 'myth' and 'legend' in a non-technical sense throughout the book).
The stemmatic approach to mythology, in which comparisons of the variants are used to produce an Ur-mythos that is the proper object of study, is thus consciously reversed.
His ultimate conclusion is that "there is simply no ontology to myth": "'Greek mythology' only begins with mythography; its debut is the moment when an Apollodorus, fashioning himself a narratologue, reduces to their plots those narratives that in fact only exist in ritual situations and poetical works.

ANZAC spirit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Following Australia's self-defence during the Second World War, the Australian myth of the ANZAC spirit was transformed by conceptions of heroic suffering, particularly in the battlefields of Papua New Guinea and in Japanese controlled POW camps.
These myths died as the ALP and CPA inspired organisations collapsed, and as the main myth became accepting of the larrikin and egalitarian elements of the current ANZAC myth.
Part of this transformation of the ANZAC Spirit myth was a recognition of otherwise unacceptable behaviour (for example, the so-called "rape of Cairo") as acceptable behaviour for Australian troops at war.

 Library of Apollodorus
In three books, the Library of Apollodorus provides a grand summary of traditional Greek mythology and heroic legends.
It provides a complete history of Greek myth, telling the story of each of the great families of heroic mythology, and the various adventures associated with the main heroes and heroines, from Jason and Perseus to Heracles and Helen of Troy.
As a primary source for Greek myth, as a reference work, and as an indication of how the Greeks themselves viewed their mythical traditions, the Library is indispensable to anyone who has an interest in classical mythology.

And it is interesting to observe that although the antique components of the depiction of the myth of Endymion served Poussin for the episode of Rinaldo and Armida, when he came to represent the myth itself, as in the beautiful Detroit picture Fig.
Thus as often in his work, the imaginative use of ancient imagery for new pictorial purposes carries with it, in subtly evoking the ancient myth, a poetic richness of overtone; and the antique language of form, unobtrusively adapted to new expressive uses, maintains a palpable and eloquent continuity.

The Heroic Age: Anglo-Saxon Lordship and Heroic Literature
Traditional heroic values in the poem combine with a sense of oneness with God and king (principally through Byrthnoth's devotion to King Aethelred and his dying prayer for the safe journey of his soul).
The poem even has some heroic verse set-pieces, such as the beasts of battle theatre, but used in unconventional ways -- not as anticipatory; rather as an expression of triumph over enemies killed in a nearly sacred defense of land, hoard, and home.
That violence serves one or another of the following processes: the defining and asserting of sacrosanct lordship and kingship; the erecting of a mythologically, legislatively, genealogically, and ecclesiastically inclusive kingship; or else the dramatic, speech ennobled shaping of that jewel in the crown of triumphant lordship -- the ideal of transcendent, sacrificial, retainer loyalty.

Even as he actively practiced (until well into his twenties) the faith of his forbears, he became consumed with Native American culture; and his worldview was arguably shaped by the dynamic tension between these two mythological perspectives.

The heroic poems of the Edda, on the contrary, with the exception of the Helgi cycle, have very close analogues in the literatures of the other great branches of the Germanic race, and these we are able to compare with the Northern versions.
Heroic cycles differ as a rule merely in their choice or combination of incidents, not in the nature of their material.
In the latter case, the story is pure myth; in the former it is legend, or a mixture of history and legend, as in the Ermanric and Dietrich tales, which have less interest for the mythologist.

Elysium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greek traditions concerning funerary ritual were reticent, but the Homeric examples encouraged other heroic visits, in the myth cycles accreted upon Theseus and upon Heracles (Campbell 1948; Ruck and Staples 1994).
In the Renaissance, the heroic population of the Elysian Fields tended to outshine its formerly dreary pagan reputation; the Elysian Fields borrowed some of the bright allure of paradise.
The Elysian Fields lay on the western margin of the earth, by the encircling stream of Oceanus (Odyssey), and there the mortal relatives of the king of the gods were transported, without tasting death, to enjoy an immortality of bliss (Odyssey book iv: 563).

Pushkin was the first "civilian" in Russian literature, independent, representing no one, a private person, and by that very fact he brought about a great change in Russian literature.
Because for English-language readers, Pushkin is probably the least definite figure among the great Russian writers; we don't know much about him, and, with rare exceptions, the existing translations of his poetry are little help (the translations of his fiction and letters are another matter).

 Notes on Euripides' Orestes
Euripides wants us to see how the standard mythological or dramatic treatments of this myth simply are inadequate, because they do not deal with humans and human passions as they really are; heroic passion is not human passion, which is often far from heroic or even sane.
Apollo ties up the loose ends of the plot, as he proclaims that he rescued Helen, who is to become a goddess along with her brothers, and Orestes is to marry the girl whose throat he is prepared to slit, after he has been acquitted by the trial at Athens.
Electra mentions that Menelaus has brought Helen with him, and the mention of Helen seems to set Orestes off.
