Heliocentrism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As early as the time of Aristarchus, the heliocentric idea was denounced as being against religion.
The earliest traces of a counter-intuitive idea that it is the Earth that is actually moving and the Sun that is at the centre of the solar system (hence the concept of heliocentrism) is found in several Vedic Sanskrit texts written in ancient India.
Aristarchus' original work on heliocentrism has not survived and is known only from others' accounts; hence the uncertainty as to his arguments on its behalf.

The Church gave a pardon to Galileo and admitted that the heliocentric theory was correct.
Copernicus defended his placement of the Sun at the center of the Universe by asking, "For who would place this lamp of a very beautiful temple in another or better place than this, wherefrom it can illuminate everything at the same time?"
Although epicycles do not exist, Copernicus' intuition was correct.

 Heliocentric Astrology
The house position of heliocentric planets is always important, especially if there is any contact with the Ascendant or Midheaven.
As a result, any aspect made to the Sun geocentrically (in a normal natal chart) will automatically form a heliocentric aspect to the Earth - these aspects are extremely important.
Heliocentric co-ordinates refer to the planetary positions as seen from the Sun at the centre of the chart with all of the planets circling it, as opposed to with the earth at the centre as in a 'traditional' natal chart.

The Prohibition of the Heliocentric Theory
Galileo responded to the claims against the theory by explaining how the Scripture may be explained according to the Copernican theory.
At this stage, the threat against Galileo was not great, because Copernicanism had not yet been prohibited by the Church.
Following the decision of the Theological Advisory Committee, the Congregation of Church Theologians issued a public edict which declared the heliocentric theory to be false.

 Aristarchus and the Heliocentric Theory
Heliocentric is derived from the Greek words, helio, meaning sun, and centric meaning center.
The Heliocentric Theory is often accredited to the Greek mathematician Copernicus, even though Aristarchus proposed this theory nearly 2000 years before.

 Heliocentric Julian date (HJD) calculation
Converts the Earth's RA and Dec, and the source's RA and Dec to X,Y and Z co-ordinates centred on the Sun (Heliocentric Cartesian).
The Heliocentric Julian date (HJD from now on) takes into account the light travel time between the Earth and a celestial source on a sphere 1 AU in diameter, as positioned on the Sun; hence the term Heliocentric.
The difference between this date and a normal Julian date is therefore different by at most 2 * 8 minutes when the Earth and the source are opposite each other when viewed from the Sun.

 Early heliocentric systems
Due to arguments such as this the heliocentric theory was almost universally rejected until Copernicus' answered these criticisms.
Using a clever geometric argument Aristarchus estimated the size of the Sun and concluded it must be enormously larger than the Earth; he then argued that it was inconceivable that such a behemoth would slavishly circle a puny object like the Earth.
A remarkable answer was provided by the heliocentric (!!) system of Aristarchus of Samos.

The pope cannot delegate the exercise of his infallible authority to the Roman Congregations, and whatever issues formally in the name of any of these, even when approved and confirmed in the ordinary official way by the pope, does not pretend to be ex cathedra and infallible.
There is still less reason for trying to found an objection to papal infallibility on the wavering conduct of Pope Vigilius in connection with the controversy of the Three Chapters; and it is all the more needless to delay upon this instance as most modern opponents of the papal claims no longer appeal to it.
As to the Galileo affair, it is quite enough to point out the fact that the condemnation of the heliocentric theory was the work of a fallible tribunal.

The heliocentric cosmology was forgotten for almost 2000 years, until the 16th century, when the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus rediscovered it.
Although Copernicus was convinced that his heliocentric model was a well-founded improvement to astronomy, he delayed publication of his results until near the end of his life, presumably because he was concerned that his work was so radical that it would be rejected or lead to censure.
Galileo was then brought before the Inquisition and forced to publicly recant; his Dialogue was banned, and he spent the last eight years of his life under house arrest.

In a book called On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies (that was published as Copernicus lay on his deathbed), Copernicus proposed that the Sun, not the Earth, was the center of the Solar System.
But, in the 17th century the work of Kepler, Galileo, and Newton would build on the heliocentric Universe of Copernicus and produce the revolution that would sweep away completely the ideas of Aristotle and replace them with the modern view of astronomy and natural science.
