Bible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The longest verse in the Bible is Esther chapter 8, verse 9.
The shortest verse in the Bible is John 11:35.
It is occasionally used to describe solely Hebrew Scripture, or the Hebrew Bible of Judaism.

Tanakh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because the books included in the Tanakh were predominantly written in Hebrew, it may also be called the Hebrew Bible.
The chapter divisions often reflect Christian exegesis of the Bible.
Thus, some scholars prefer Hebrew Bible as a term that covers the commonality of Tanakh and the Old Testament while avoiding sectarian bias.

 Hebrew Bible Encyclopedia Article
As compared with the Latin Vulgate, the Hebrew Bible includes the entire Old Testament with the exception of the seven deuterocanonical books, Tobias, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, I and II Machabees, and the deuterocanonical portions of Esther (x, 4 to end) and Daniel (iii, 24-90; xiii; xiv).
Even if several of these books were written in Aramaic, that fact alone would not account for their exclusion from the Hebrew Bible, since lengthy passages of Daniel (ii, 4, to vii, 28) and of Esdras (iv, 7, to vi, 18; vii, 12 to 26) are in that language.
In late manuscripts and in printed Bibles, the open section is indicated by the letter Pe in the vacant space preceding it, the closed section by the letter Samech.

 Hebrew Bible - Free Encyclopedia
Hebrew Bible refers to the textual canon of the Jewish Tanakh, which contains books that were originally written mainly in Hebrew.
The Hebrew Bible includes the same books as the Protestant Old Testament, but not the deuterocanonical portions of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Old Testament.
Section 4.3 of the Style Manual for the Society of Biblical Literature recommends the use of the term "Hebrew Bible" as a bias-free term in preference to the term "Old Testament" in academic writing.

The program of study in the Hebrew Bible is itself subdivided into different specializations, in recognition of the fact that students generally wish to define their interest in Bible in terms of various related disciplines and fields.
Students are thus asked to choose among the following paths of specialization: Bible and the History of Israel (concentrating in either the preexilic or postexilic periods); Bible and Archaeology; Bible and Semitic Philology; Bible and Theology/History of Exegesis (concentrating in either theology or the history of exegesis).
In order to be eligible to take the course for credit in their second year, students must have a good knowledge of the contents of the Hebrew Bible and of Biblical Hebrew.

For over three millennia Hebrew has been the religious, and often the literary and secular, language of the Jewish people.
In the post biblical period Hebrew gradually gave way to Aramaic as the spoken language, but continued throughout the centuries to serve as the language of ritual, prayer, literature, and written communication.

Another section of the Hebrew Bible consists of the prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, the twelve "minor," i.e., brief, prophets).
The English word "Bible" is from the Greek phrase ta biblia, "the books," an expression Hellenistic Jews used to describe their sacred books several centuries before the time of Jesus.
Since they believed him to be the messiah ("anointed one"), God's savior and the harbinger of a new and perfect age, they sought to find mention of him in the Hebrew Bible itself.

 The Hebrew Bible
The core of the Hebrew Bible is the Torah, the first seven books which define who the Jews are through story and law.
The process of redefinition was repeated when Islam pronounced the Bible incomplete and its existing texts flawed, and presented the Qur'an as the definitive religious scripture.
The classic collection of works written in Hebrew (the ancient language of the Jews) was accepted as divine scripture not only by Jews but by early Christians, though few Christians could read Hebrew and preferred to read and quote Greek translations which contained some passages and several whole books lacking in the Hebrew text.

The Bible is considered a sacred text by three major world religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Modern scholars believe that the Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh, was composed by four or five writers between 1000 to 400 BCE based on much older traditions.
There are many disagreements about the order and composition of the Bible between various religions and sects, some of which are doctrinal in nature.

 Canons of the Hebrew Bible
As accustomed as many of us are to seeing the books of the Bible in a certain arrangement, it is easy to forget that such arrangement is the product of a certain religious tradition, and that other religious traditions might have other ways of seeing the biblical books.
But there probably should be more attention paid to the similarities, and the implications that has for understanding the Bible as Scripture for the Church.
The Christian churches tended to follow the arrangement of Old Testament books within the third century BC Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Septuagint.

In Christian Bibles it ends the Old Testament; its final words about Elijah as messenger, already in the Gospels and subsequently in Christian tradition, are traditionally interpreted to foreshadow Jesus as the Christ.
