 Harishchandra-1
Raajaa Harishchandra was the son of Satyavrat or popularly known as Trishanku in Soorya Vansh and was the king of Ayodhyaa.
Indra asked, "Do you find anybody who sticks to truth at this time, on earth?" Vashishth Jee said, "Raajaa Harishchandra is like that." Vishwaamitra said, "No, he is not." Argument grew hotter and ended up in testing Harishchandra for his truthfulness by Vishwaamitra Jee.
He is not a main character of any religious book as such, but it is good to know about him because he involves two great Rishi - Vishwaamitra and Vashishth.

Raja Harishchandra was the son of Triksankhu, of Ishwaku lineage (Lord Rama was also of the Ishwaku lineage), and ruled Ayodhya in North India.
When a son was born, Harishchandra and Taramati’s joy grew no bounds; but very soon, like dark rain clouds covering a clear sky, the words of Lord Varuna halted their pleasure.
From now on, I shall rigorously practice truth in my daily conduct.” From then on, Harishchandra live the life of truthfulness and soon became renowned as “Satyavrata” — an observer of truth.

The Story of My Experiments with Truth - An Autobiography
To follow truth and to go through all the ordeals Harishchandra went through was the one ideal it inspired in me. I literally believed in the story of Harishchandra.
Still both Harishchandra and Shravana are living realities for me, and I am sure I should be moved as before if I were to read those plays again today.
'Why should not all be truthful like Harishchandra?' was the question I asked myself day and night.

To distingush themselves from the general masses, the learned Muslims used to write in Urdu (infested with Persian and Arabic vocabulary), while Khadiboli became prominent among educated Hindus.
Khadiboli with heavily Sanskritized vocabulary or Sahityik Hindi (Literary Hindi) was popularized by the writings of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Bhartendu Harishchandra and others.
Bhartendu Harishchandra preferred Braj dialect for poetry, but for prose, he deliberately used Khadiboli.

Hence the predominant influence of Sanskrit drama in the works of Bhartendu like, 'Chandravali, Satya Harishchandra, Bharat Janani', which all show the essential parts of Sanskrit drama like Nandipath, Prastavana, and Bharatvakya.
The soliloquies and the lengthy poetic dialogues in his plays also reflect the Sanskrit effect.
If 'Chandravali' dealt with love, then 'Satya Harishchandra dealt with mythology, 'Neeldevi' with patriotism, while 'Andher Nagri' was full of satire and black humour.
