 Hanafi Islam
Hanafi scholars refuse to control a human religious or spiritual destiny, and refuse to give that right to any human institution.
The Hanafi school is known for its liberal religious orientation that elevates belief over practice and is tolerant of differences within Muslim communities.
Notwithstanding their common heritage from Imam Abu Hanifah, the scholars belonging to the Hanafi madhhab are divided in the Barelvi and the Deobandi school, and these two schools have different attitude toward Wahhabism.

 Deobandi Islam
Traditionally, Sunni Islam of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence was the dominant religion of Afganistan.
The tack of Darul Uloom Deoband is in accordance with the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, Hanafiate practical method (Mazhab) and the disposition (Mashrab) of its holy founders, Hazrat Maulana Mohammad Qasim Nanautavi (Allah's mercy be on him!) and Hazrat Maulana Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi (may his secret be sanctified).
The Taliban also adhered to the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam, making it the dominant religion in the country for most of 2001.

Not to speak of mundane matters, even in matters pertaining to worship, which in the view of literal-minded people have nothing to do with reason, the rules framed by Abu Hanifah are eminently rational.
For under a just regime, king and beggar, the elect and the rejected, have the same status, and it is a proof of Islam's broad-mindedness that it puts ruler and ruled on the same footing.
The Imam is reported to have said: "Faith neither increases nor decreases." There is no doubt that this is a saying of his, but it has been misinterpreted, not only by muhaddithin and Shafi'is, but even by some Hanafis.

 Brouhaha over a fatwa
He laments that most of his fellow Hanafis, Deobandis and Barelvis, are loath to accept the need for ijithad, although ijithad is entirely in accordance with the commandments of Prophet Muhammad.
After all, it was at the suggestion of the renowned Deobandi scholar, Ashraf Ali Thanvi, that the Muslim Dissolution of Marriage Act of 1939 was passed that bypassed the Hanafi rule that apostasy annuls a marriage in order to prevent Muslim women seeking a divorce from abandoning Islam.
Critics of the fatwa have argued that no matter what the Hanafi position on the matter is, there is no harm if Imrana be allowed to resort to the equally 'orthodox' Shafi school for redress.

 Fury Over Fatwa on Imrana
Most Hanafi 'ulama, both Deobandis and Barelvis, who represent the majority of the Indian Muslims, appear to concur with the fatwa, as the fatwa is said to be in accordance with the Hanafi interpretation of the shariah as laid down in the classical Hanafi fiqh texts.
He argues that although the fatwa is in accordance with the traditional Hanafi view, which the Deobandis staunchly defend, there is actually no compelling religious argument for Muslims to blindly follow Hanafi jurisprudential precedent.
'They insist on blindly following Hanafi fiqh, although they also claim that the other three schools are also valid', he says, adding that their 'lack of familiarity with the real-world problems of Muslims' makes for their dogged resistance to any reform in traditional Hanafi jurisprudence.
