Haggadah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One famous example is the Kafra Haggadah, which has a medieval appearance like an illuminated manuscript but was created by a mother and son of the Kafra family to pass the time while hiding from the Nazis.
"Haggadah" in Hebrew means "Telling." It is the text used in a traditional service held by Jewish families around dinner on Passover night, commemorating the miraculous delivery of the Jewish nation from slavery in Egypt, over 3000 years ago, as described in the book of Exodus in the Bible.
Conservative Judaism might use Haggadahs that are only written in the Hebrew language and conforms tightly to an early text.

As mentioned, "Haggadah" means "narration", "telling", or "recital" in Hebrew, and derives from the biblical commandment in Exodus 13:8 by G-d to Moses and the Hebrews: "You shall tell your son on that day: it is because of what the Lord did for me when I came forth out of Egypt...".
The earliest illuminated Sephardic Passover Haggadah is the opulent Golden Haggadah from Barcelona, Spain circa 1320.
Passover Haggadah Component #14: According to the school of Hillel and as written in Pesachim 10:6 of the Mishnah, the first two chapters of Hallel are recited.

 JewishEncyclopedia.com - MIDRASH HAGGADAH:
The word "haggadah" (Aramaic, "agada") means primarily the recitation or teaching of Scripture; in a narrower sense it denotes the exegetic amplification of a Biblical passage and the development of a new thought based thereupon.
The epigoni of the Haggadah flourished in the fourth and at the beginning of the fifth century, and were followed by the anonymous haggadists who preserved and revised the immense haggadic material.
The Haggadah of the Amoraim is the continuation of that of the Tannaim; and, according to Bacher, there really is no difference between the Amoraim and the Tannaim with reference to the Haggadah.

Ohr Somayach :: Pesach :: The Malbim Hagaddah
The sixth section of the Haggadah begins with the paragraph "L'phichach -- Therefore we are obliged to avow thanks", an introduction to the recital of Hallel, the psalms of praise to God for the miracles of the redemption from Egypt.
Not only was the compiler of the Haggadah consistent with the order of words in the Source Verse, but he also achieved a logical progression by first introducing the obligation to recount the Exodus ("V'higadita l'vincha"), then instructing when to fulfill this obligation ("Bayom Hahu"), and then including the actual fulfillment of the obligation ("Leimor").
Since this verse is the source for the mitzvah to recount the Exodus and, therefore, the basis for the Haggadah, the compiler of the Haggadah composed its content and order to correspond with the phrases in the verse V'higadita.

Because of its exquisite illumination, the Sarajevo Haggadah is one of the most famous Jewish manuscripts of this period.
This is one of the oldest existing fragments of the Haggadah text known to scholars today.

 Karaite Passover Haggadah: Introduction
Unlike the Rabbis, the Karaites do not claim that their Haggadah is the required text which must be read in order to fulfil the requirement of commemorating our redemption from Egypt; such a text does not exist or it would have been commanded in the Torah.
The "Blessing after the Meal", which takes up about a third of the Haggadah in the Egyptian version and about a fourth in the Russian version, is identical in the two versions except that the Russian version omits the section from "These are the feasts" until "as he hath commanded us".
Most of the Karaite Haggadah consists of Biblical verses.

Ohr Somayach :: Pesach :: The History of the Haggadah
The word Haggadah comes from the Torah command - "And you shall tell (v'Higadeta) your children on that day..." Although the minimal fulfillment of this mitzvah is a simple recounting of the going out of Egypt and explaining a few of the Pesach symbols, proper fulfillment requires much more.
Another is 'Dayeinu.' Rav Saadia Gaon (882 CE - 942 CE) included neither in his Haggadah, although he did recognize the existence of Dayeinu.
The Shibolei HaLeket (Rabbi Tzidkayah HaRofei, Italy; 1230-1300) writes: "We are accustomed to recite 'piyutim' (Poetic Prayers) which are arranged with words of praise and thanksgiving." Seven 'piyutim' are customarily added to the Haggadah of Rav Amram Gaon, to make up the present day Ashkenazic Haggadah.
