 KUAN YIN: Compassionate Saviouress
Although Kuan Yin was still being portrayed as a male as late as the tenth century, with the introduction of Tantric Buddhism into China in the eighth century during the T'ang Dynasty, the image of the celestial bodhisattva as a beautiful white-robed goddess was predominant and the devotional cult surrounding her became increasingly popular.
Scholars believe that the Buddhist monk and translator Kumarajiva was the first to refer to the female form of Kuan Yin in his Chinese translation of the Lotus Sutra in 406 A.D. Of the thirty-three appearances of the bodhisattva referred to in his translation, seven are female.
Kuan Yin is considered to be the feminine form of Avalokitesvara(Sanskrit), the bodhisattva of compassion of Indian Buddhism whose worship was introduced into China in the third century.

I do also subscribe to those beliefs, but at the same time I pay homage to the various Taoist gods and spirits that we believe are part of life, nature and the universe...such as the sky god, earth god, moon goddess...

Kuan Yin, the goddess of mercy, is originally known as Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in the Lotus Sutra, a Buddhist text written in the ancient Indian language Sanscript.

As a Bodhisattva, the true enlightened one, who most embodies compassion, and, the name Avalokitesvara implies as the one who reaches out for cries of the world, Kuan Yin delayed her entry into Nirvana for the salvation of the suffering ones.

phorum - Life! Forum at Asiawind - Guan Yin(or Kuan Yin) - The "goddess" of mercy in Chinese art
Bodhisattva,in Mahayana Buddhism is the title given to a person who is to become a Buddha and it's an ideal of those seeking "enlightenment" not for themselve alone but for all beings.
Buddha(Gautama) before his enlightenment was termed or described only as "Bodhisattva" - the one who, having gained degrees of enlightenment, remains in the world in order to help other beings to their release.Hence Chinese people say of: - 'Guan Yin Pu2 Sa4' and 'Pu'sa Xin1 Chang2'(compassion in one's heart).
In Chinese Buddhism, the "goddess" of compassion is so very deep-rooted in the Chinese belief since 12th and 13th centuries by taking on a female form.
