Topic: Great Apostasy

Great Apostasy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fusion of church and state is a central theme of the Anabaptist view of the Great Apostasy, and of their consequent assertion during the Protestant Reformation that the churches of Catholic Europe needed not simply reform, but a radical re-establishment based on the Bible alone.
They claim that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the restoration of Jesus' original church, has the authentic Priesthood authority, and all doctrines and ordinances of the Gospel.
The Great Apostasy surely was complete, for purposes of the Reformers, when the Council of Trent emphatically rejected even a modified form of Protestant reformation for the Roman Catholic Church.

 Great Apostasy
This is an important issue, for it is the whole reason given for the existence of the LDS church, as well as the reason it condemns all other churches.
This restoration supposedly was necessary because there was a "total" apostasy of the early church soon after the apostles died, and that apostasy left the world without any true church for over 1700 years.
In III Nephi 28 we are told of 3 disciples who were given great authority and who were granted their desire to not die but continue to live and bring men to Christ.

Such an apostasy is necessary if they are to justify their claim to be the true faith.
The Witnesses claim that, as a result of this apostasy, pagan doctrines such as the Trinity, the immortality of the soul, the deity of Christ, and eternal punishment of the wicked were introduced into "Christendom."  The Great Apostasy
Inasmuch as the course of apostasy among the Nephites was so rapid, and the period intervening between the establishment of the Church and the destruction of the nation was so brief, we shall consider the history of the Church to its close, and thus obviate the necessity of recurring to the subject in later chapters.
The scriptures cited are sufficient to show that widespread apostasy from the Church was foreseen; that the corruption of the Church itself was likewise foreknown; and that on both hemispheres a general apostasy was foretold.
Let it be repeated that apostasy from the Church is insignificant as compared with the apostasy of the Church as an institution.

The Great Apostasy, not the Great Façade:
The Great Façade believe that those who accept and defend a non-Catholic, heretical and apostate Vatican II religion are their fellow Catholics, members of the same Church to which they belong, and adherents of the same faith to which they subscribe.
The Great Façade doesn’t label this defection from the faith by Antipope John Paul II and his bishops as apostasy or even as heresy, even though their book provides overwhelming proof that neither Antipope John Paul II nor his bishops are remotely Catholic, but are total apostates from the faith.
Great Façade say no!   On page 57 of their book, the authors comment on a series of post-Vatican II novelties which they documented on pages 42-57, one of which was Kasper’s teaching that the Old Covenant is valid and salvific for the Jews (quoted already).

A great apostasy, wherein the doctrines of Greek pagan philosophy replaced apostolic teaching, would most likely have begun in areas where the church was accepting a large number of converts with backgrounds in Greek religion and philosophy, such as Alexandria, Egypt.
Included in this apostasy would be disciples of the apostles themselves, as well as those who witnessed the thousands of martyrs who, just a short time previously, refused to deny Christ, either explicitly or by worshiping pagan gods.
This conclusion seems undeniable in view of the Great Commission, the power of the Holy Spirit, the absence of literary evidence for an alternative group of believers with a gospel similar to that preached by Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the implausibility of the required simultaneous loss of faith by an entire generation of geographically dispersed Christians.

Times & Seasons » The Problems of the Great Apostasy
Apostasy, or the Great Apostasy means and implies I think a condition when the priesthood authority to perform the saving ordinances, and to enable preaching of the gospel by the power of the Spirit, was lacking among mortals on the earth.
It doesn’t mean, as it seems to be used in post #2, that people or the Church aren’t living the gospel perfectly.
Of course, with the theology of the restoration has come the knowledge that there was an apostasy and that the restoration was needed, but beyond that, we don’t have much of a basis to explain the apostasy and restoration, especially to non-believers.

Joseph Smith's calling as a prophet was necessitated by the great apostasy that had taken place in the early Church established by Christ in the meridian of time.
In view of the evidence from the ancient texts cited herein, it seems clear that the general apostasy in the early Church was the result of individual apostasy by dissident Christians who not only rejected the Lord's chosen servants, but sometimes set themselves up in their place.
President Young was speaking about individual apostasy, which was also on the prophet Joseph Smith's mind when he explained "that the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness.
