The Anthroposophical Society is to be an association of people whose will it is to nurture the life of the soul, both in the individual and in human society, on the basis of a true knowledge of the spiritual world.
It will endeavor to fulfill this task by making the anthroposophical spiritual science cultivated at the Goetheanum in Dornach the center of its activities, together with all that results from this for brotherhood in human relationships and for the moral and religious as well as the artistic and cultural life.
Anyone can become a member, without regard to nationality, social standing, religion, or scientific or artistic conviction, who considers as justified the existence of an institution such as the Goetheanum in Dornach, in its capacity as a school of spiritual science.

During the Christmas conference in 1923, he founded the School of Spiritual Science, which is also known as the Goetheanum or by some the spiritual Goetheanum.
Somewhat independently of the Waldorf schools, a separate school for Spiritual Science was founded at the Goetheanum during Christmas 1923.
These two structures, both built in Dornach, Switzerland (the first beginning in 1913), were intended to house a University for Spiritual Science.

Waldorf Critics Archive 0211.1 (November, 2002, Part 1 of 2)
Note the two dates used: "When Mercury Stood in Libra The Writing of the Stars "THE APPROACHING OPENING of the Goetheanum at Michaelmas brings before the soul that September evening when the foundation stone of the house dedicated to spiritual science was laid at nightfall by Dr. Steiner in a solemn ritual.
He determined how the building was to be orientated for the best spiritual position in the cosmos, what colors were to be used for spiritual purposes etc. When he laid the foundation stone for his above ground Rosicrucian temple in Malsh, he met with a gathering of followers in the middle of the night.
The same goes for the mystical temple - the Goetheanum - in Dornach.

The Michael Impulse - Lecture IX
This building has not only been put here externally for the use of the Anthroposophical Movement, or of the Anthroposophical Society, but just as it stands there, in all its details, it is born out of that which our movement purposes to represent before the world, spiritually and otherwise.
Up to the present time it could not be completed, it is true, and even now we can hardly predict definitely when it will be finished.
Modern civilization has so little consciousness of the mystery which underlies this, that we may say the following: For certain reasons, about which I shall perhaps speak here again, we have called this building Goetheanum, as resting upon the Goethean views of art and knowledge.
