Gnostic Christianity and the Myth of Sophia
The central motif of all of the Gnostic scriptures was the liberation brought by Christ's death and resurrection.
Constantine declared Christianity the only state religion and the Council of Nicea declared that Jesus was identical with the one and only God of the universe.
The Gnostic scriptures are of three kinds: esoteric cosmological works, gospels that contain discourses between Jesus and his followers, and ethical books of sayings or pure teaching.

 Gnostic and Historic Christianity
The supreme rôle assigned to the Christ of the Gospels, as of the Gnostics, is that of Manifestor and Revealer of the Father in heaven.
With the Gnostics knowledge was the foundation of their faith; but the Historic Christians made faith the basis of knowledge, and the first demand of the new faith was for the convert to believe that all the mythical typology of the past had been made literally true in the present.
Gnostic Christianity was absolutely, fundamentally, and for ever opposed to the historic rendering, and yet the Gnostic doctrines of the fourth Gospel, and of Paul's and James' Epistles, have been allowed to remain under cover and control as spiritual forces artfully tethered to draw for the physical and anti-Gnostic Faith.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Gnosticism
Gnostics were "people who knew", and their knowledge at once constituted them a superior class of beings, whose present and future status was essentially different from that of those who, for whatever reason, did not know.
The Gnostics, it is true, borrowed their terminology almost entirely from existing religions, but they only used it to illustrate their great idea of the essential evil of this present existence and the duty to escape it by the help of magic spells and a superhuman Saviour.
The Gnostics seem also to have used oil sacramentally for the healing of the sick, and even the dead were anointed by them to be rendered safe and invisible in their transit through the realms of the archons.

 The Gnostic Jesus
In the Gnostic view of spirituality has man ascending to different levels, which it fostered a spiritual superiority through receiving visions, revelations, communications with angels, insight by God speaking directly and giving unknown doctrines; regularly in long conversations with its participants and giving doctrines that are not found in the Scripture.
Gnostic believers are “saved” when they realize who they are-a part of the divine; possessing within themselves the kingdom; capable of anything; and untrammeled by human traditions, creational structures, or divine laws.
The Gnostics used allegorical interpretations, spiritualizing literal meanings in the Scripture.

 Amazon.com: Books: The Gnostic Gospels
Gnosticism's Christian form grew to prominence in the 2nd century A.D. Ultimately denounced as heretical by the early church, Gnosticism proposed a revealed knowledge of God ("gnosis" meaning "knowledge" in Greek), held as a secret tradition of the apostles.
To the orthodox Christians, this was blasphemy, for the church as we know it is basically built on the faith and belief that God's son took on a human form and died in the literal sense on the Cross in order to conquer Death and save all of his followers.
Gnostic teachings were thus seen as subversive of this social order by offering direct access to God outside of the priests and bishops of the orthodox church.

Luckily for the Gnostic, salvation is available in the form of gnosis or knowledge imparted by a Gnostic redeemer, who is Christ, a figure sent from the higher God to free humankind from the Creator God Yaldabaoth.
In the Gnostic myth, the supreme god is completely perfect and therefore alien and mysterious, "ineffable," "unnamable," "immeasurable light which is pure, holy and immaculate" (Apocryphon of John).
The ancient view was that females contribute the matter in reproduction, and males the form; thus, Sophia's action produces an offspring that is imperfect or even malformed, and she casts it away from the other divine beings in the pleroma into a separate region of the cosmos.
