Robinson is best known for being the first openly gay, noncelibate priest to be ordained to the historic episcopate (see gay bishop).
After being ordained as a deacon and later as a priest, Robinson briefly served as Curate at Christ Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
The General Convention of 2003 became the center for debate over Robinson's election, as conservatives and liberals within the Church argued over whether Robinson should be allowed to become bishop.

The controversy over the first openly gay bishop Gene Robinson shows no sign of dying down in the Anglican Church, after the Church of Uganda (COU) publicly withdrew its invitation to a US visit today.
COU officials had sent an invitation to the US Episcopal Church, asking it to attend the consecration of its new Archbishop on January 25th, but has now said the invitation is invalid to most of the US church, because it refuses to force Robinson to step down.
The COU official did not go into any more details about which sections of the US Church would be free to attend the event, which will see Archbishop Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo replaced by the Right Reverend Henry Orombi.
