Topic: Gelukpa

 Gelug Tradition
The Gelukpa school has been able to produce a succession of eminent religious leaders, people who embody the ideals of scholarship and meditative practice initiated by Je Tsong Khapa.
These two lamas came to be regarded as the "spiritual sons" of Tsong Khapa and are commonly depicted sitting on either side of their master in thankas and other religious paintings.
The fifth Dalai Lama (the Great Fifth as he is usually called) proved to be an able statesman as well as an important religious figure, and he consolidated the rule of the Dalai Lamas, who continued to be recognized as the rulers of Tibet until the Chinese annexation of Tibet in 1959.

The Gelukpa, or "Yellow Hat" sect of Buddhism founded by Tsong-kha-pa in the late 1400’s was the sect from which the line of Dalai Lamas began.Tsong-kha-pa’s nephew, Gendun Truppa was recognized as an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, and from then on, the reincarnate of the Dalai Lama has been the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhists..
He established a new sect of Tibetan Buddhism known as Gelukpa which was as strict as the Ka-dam-pas sect, but also used a curriculum of systematic doctrinal studies endin in the earning of the degree of Geshe, "spiritual friend" (Robinson, 111).
Though different sects of Buddhism are concerned with different aspects of life, and the Gelukpas are now the ruling sect with the Dalai Lama, all exist in harmony without ension.

The Dalai Lama is considered to be the head of the Gelukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism (the numerically largest Tibetan Buddhist sect).
The Nyingma school is not as strict or as monastic as the Gelukpa school and are a much less hierachical sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
The term “Dalai” is actually a Mongolian rather than Tibetan word for the head of the Gelukpa school) In his writings and speeches he humbly refers to himself merely as the fallible monk Tenzin Gyatso.
