GAMPOPA WAS ONE of the great fathers of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.
During the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, the fourth Buddha, Gampopa was his student, and a bodhisattva and healer who healed people by giving herbal medicine.
The Fourth Dharma of Gampopa is a teaching on how to recognize, train in, and stabilize this recognition of the buddha nature.

 Gampopa
Known as Gampopa, he was one of the main disciples of practitioner-poet, Milarepa.
Buddha Shakyamuni predicted the coming of a King of Samadhi, master of Mahamudra meditation, and this is understood to refer to Gampopa.
After Milarepa had given meditation instructions to Gampopa, Milarepa told him to go to Gampo Mountain, which was a solitary place, and practice there.

Dharmakirti College 2004 Teachings: Venerable Khenchen Parchhimba
Dharma Lord Gampopa (1074-1153 C.E.), the author of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation, was fully accomplished in the teachings and practice of Buddhism, the philosophy taught by Shakayamuni Buddha circa 560 B.C.E. Gampopa studied the sutra system of training in the Kadampa lineage and obtained tantra training from the great saint Milarepa.
Phagmodrupa in turn was the root teacher of Lord Jigten Sumgon, the founder of the Drikung Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.
Because he himself thus embodied the complete form of Buddhism, Lord Gampopa successfully established complete Buddhism in Tibet…He completely dispelled the darkness of confusion and reconciled all misunderstanding between the sutra and tantra systems…Of the many important texts he wrote, The Jewel Ornament of Liberation is probably the most significant.

Snow Lion Publications: Newsletter- THE LIFE OF GAMPOPA
Gampopa replied that he had received the four empowerments of Guhyasamaja, the Hevajra empowerment, the magnificent blessings of Dakmema, the teachings of Luipa, the magnificent blessings of the Six-Ornament Vajravarahi from Lama Lodru of Maryul, and many empowerments from other lamas.
Gampopa was silent for a while, drinking in the meaning of the guru's answer.
Milarepa then blessed Gampopa and initiated him into the Sindura Vajrayogini practice of the Whispered Lineage, and in the mandala of the deity painted in cinnabar, Gampopa received the pith-instructions.

Gampopa took these instructions, practiced them and developed such good qualities in meditation so that, for instance, when he sat down to meditate he was able to stay within the same meditation without moving for thirteen days.
Gampopa overheard what they were saying because it was through his guru's compassion that this particular scene would act to inspire him to practice dharma very intensely.
We should make a wish to be like him." As that last beggar was speaking one could tell that he was moved by faith because he had tears coming down from his eyes and he had folded his hands at his heart in the gesture of prayer.

 Gampopa Precepts on Windsor Castle
Gampopa (1079-1152) is considered the greatest disciple of Milarepa, and did much to systematize Tibetan Buddhist teaching to make it fit for further development.
Precepts that follow, were compiled by the Tibetan guru Gampopa (1079-1152), also known as Sgam-po-pa and Dakpo Lhaje (or Dvagpo-Lharje), in the middle of the 1100s AD [cf.

It is said that Gampopa in his former lives was a disciple of Buddha Kasyapa and Buddha Shakyamuni.
When the Buddha asked who of his students will teach the Samadhiraja and Candrapradipa-Sutra in the future when times will get harder, Gampopa said that he will do that.
In two Sutras Buddha made a prophecy of the appearance of the monk-doctor in the northern land of the snow - in Tibet.

Gampopa was very happy and asked, “Should I make a mandala offering?” Milarepa said, “No, there is no need, but do not waste this instruction.” Milarepa then raised the back of his clothes and showed his buttocks, which was full of calluses.
Close to death, Gampopa said, “When I enter the non-dual, all-pervading element, you shouldn’t think, ‘Now the lama does not exist.’ My mind is inseparable from all the precious lamas and Buddhas of the three times, permeating all time and all places.
Thus was foretold the coming of Dharma Lord Gampopa, all his disciples and his lineage.

Aspiration Prayer Commentary by Trangu Rinpoche
Gampopa is also considered the particular source of the Mahamudra tradition because in a former life he heard the Buddha teaching the Samadhiraja Sutra and he promised Buddha he would protect and propagate it.
In fulfillment of the prediction of the Buddha, Gampopa widely taught what was taught in the Samadhiraja Sutra, which is the Mahamudra.
In this sutra Buddha said that in past aeons Gampopa head learned and practiced the practice of the Samadhiraja Sutra, which is the Mahamudra.

Gampopa (1070-1153), the father of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, was the foremost student of the great yogi Milarepa.
In this commentary on the Precious Garland, one of the masterworks of Gampopa, Rinpoche outlines in twenty-eight categories what practitioners of varying levels need to know in order to perfect their spiritual practice.
As Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche points out in this commentary to the Precious Garland, for those with faith in Gampopa, studying this text can be "exactly the same as receiving teachings directly from him."

The Kagyu Lineage - the Karmapa website
Gampopa, whose coming was prophesied by the Buddha, taught Mahamudra in these three different ways and this has become a tradition in the Kagyu lineage.
The Karma Kagyu lineage is the most influential of the Tibetan buddhist lineages outside Tibet, and this tradition is studied and practiced all around the world today.
His incarnation, His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwa Karmapa, is now living in India as an exiled Tibetan refugee.

In Theravada Buddhism, the Bodhisatta ( Pali) is an aspirant striving for Enlightenment, so that once Awakened, he or she may efficiently aid other beings with the expertise of supreme Enlightenment.
Bodhisattvas are a popular subject in Buddhist art.
According to Mahayana tradition, Arhats have purified their stains and all emotional afflictions, but have not yet attained complete, unsurpassable enlightenment, or buddhahood.

Creating the Gampopa Rupa, Ane Konchok Drolma
Our vision is that Gampopa and the stupa will be a beacon of the Buddha's essence and teachings for a long time to come.
At the same time, Gampopa's renunciation, devotion to his Guru, and dedication to practice are in themselves perfect.
It is said that Gampopa had 51,000 monks and 500 yogis as students.

 Gampopa
Gampopa received transmissions from Milarepa and meditated for many years.
Gampopa did so, and he had four great disciples which founded the four main lineages.
However, Mila only cut through Gampopa’s preconceptions and ego even further because instead of using vows to aid his enlightenment, Gampopa became fixated on vows and his mind became more narrow due to them.

 4Dharmas
We say I am doing vajrayana practice and there are many reasons why we say that – you are following a master or at a centre or meditating on vajrayana meditation but this is all nonsense reasons.
All the students and friends who came to this retreat are kind of advanced students and the teachings are dedicated to those who have listened to spiritual teachings for at least a couple of years.
4Dharmas of Gampopa first is narrow minded mind, that kind of people don’t have Bodhichitta they have narrow mind they have space in their mind that is small and no one can fit in except themselves

The spiritual biography of Gampopa, covered in the first half of this book, is a very good example of avoiding the extremes in practice and of showing how we should correctly practice.
Besides writing the Jewel Ornament of Liberation, Gampopa distilled the essence of the Buddhist path into four short lines or truths, called dharmas.

Next to Marpa is his Tibetan disciple Milarepa ( mi-la-ras-pa, 1040-1123), followed by Gampopa ( sgam-po-pa, 1079-1153), the latter's chief disciple.
Gampopa's greatest disciple was Phagmodrupa (1110-1170, whose portrait has already been noted at Alchi), perhaps the diminuitive figure in Vajrasattva's crown.
Skipping the figure directly above Taglung Thangpa Chenpo, one finds the Tibetans who inherited the Indian teachings: Marpa, his disciple Milarepa, and his disciple Gampopa.

 Lineage
In accord with Gampopa's intent he emphasized the Fivefold Path of Mahamudra (bodhicitta, yidam deity, the four kayas of guru yoga, mahamudra and dedication) which encompasses the complete teachings of the Buddha, both sutra and tantra.
It came from Buddha Shakyamuni, and it was passed to Nagajuna, then to Chanta Kirti and so forth, on to Atisha, and then from Atisha to Gampopa.
This lineage directly came from Buddha Shakyamuni and the primordial Buddha, VajraDhara.

I’ve been meaning to write this earlier but haven’t had time, but now here are some thoughts on Gampopa’s Great Seal and Sakya Pandita’s critique of him.
Not doing it in this tantric way, is what Gampopa is criticized for, right?
To me it appears, that the whole thing is about a larger question of whether, in sutra and tantra, there is one and the same, or different kinds of realizations?
