Topic: Freethought

Freethought - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freethought is itself concerned with values and ethics and so is after a logical understanding of the same manner of principles and beliefs that a religion affords.
Freethought has at times been construed as opposition to organized religion, especially those that possess beliefs in supernatural beings.
In 1994, this idea was acted on in the founding of the Church of Freethought, which now exists as two active congregations of freethinkers: the North Texas Church of Freethought and the Houston Church of Freethought.

Freethought - definition of Freethought in Encyclopedia
Freethought is a characteristic of individuals whose opinions are formed on the basis of an understanding and rejection of tradition, authority or established belief.
There are strong ties between freethought and atheism, deism, heretic, skepticism (scepticism), and both humanism and secular humanism, but none of these terms are synonymous with one another.
Some atheist freethinkers hold that freethought is best considered as a religion itself since it offers alternative analyses of and conclusions about religious questions which simply happen not to include supernaturalism.

Why I am not a Humanist
The older word, "freethought", aptly described the common denominator of these disparate organisations, namely, that they attracted people who insisted on the right to follow their own line of musing and reasoning, specifically on religious matters, instead of accepting some dogmatic, supernatural creed.
It is reminiscent of "I believe in God", and I contend that the freethought or rationalist movement should not be promoting an ersatz religious mode of thinking but offering a radical departure from it by saying that the whole concept of "believing in" (in the dogmatic religious sense) is erroneous.
Until the 1940s what is now called the humanist movement was known as the freethought movement.

Freethought is the rejection of authority, dogma, and faith as reliable sources of truth in favor of rational and empirical inquiry and speculation.
Most religion and spiritual claims are based on methods completely antithetical to Freethought.
But we do think that anyone who doesn't bow to authority, dogma or faith should be highly skeptical of spiritual and religious claims.

Freethought Coming Out Day allows friends, family, and communities of freethinkers the chance to understand who we are, what we believe, and that freethought is in every community and should not be looked upon with fear, but with respect as a positive, compassionate way to live one's life.
Freethought "Coming Out" Day is an annual day of celebration which gives those freethinkers who have been unable to proudly declare themselves a platform from which to do so.
At community festivals and on Freethought Coming Out Day, rent a booth and display the quilt, along with other group and freethought literature, so that the community can see what freethought means to you.

In particular, the radical moral and cultural relativist rhetoric of certain politically-correct reformers, while it purports to be "liberal", it is anti-humanistic: it tolerates intolerance; preaches moral superiority of one group over another; promotes radical and fanatic religion; curbs free speech ("political-correctness"); and often exaggerates the rights of anti-social elements on the expense of remainder.
We reject "cultural relativism", which consists in accepting that men and women of Muslim culture should be deprived of the right to equality, freedom and secular values in the name of respect for cultures and traditions.
But while freethinkers share with some leftist "liberals" (or rather, neo-liberals) their concern for egalitarian causes, freethought must be distinguished from left-wing doctrines.

 History of Freethought
A convenient term is Freethinker which means (Concise Oxford Dictionary) "a rejecter of authority in religious belief" and, by allowing that to be even a partial rejection on some narrow point, and by taking a wide definition of the words 'religious belief', we can cast a wide net and call ourselves Freethinkers.
It was a Christian view on a religious topic, not an atheistic pronouncement but, for its day and age, it was a freethought view, inasmuch as it went against the prevailing religious authorities' views and probably helped to pave the way for even more departures.
Erasmus of Holland was another such freethinker from within the church; he was a Rotterdam Augustine monk who espoused the view that man stood in direct relation to god without the need of an intermediary - not a popular view of the day.

 Examining Freethought
Freethought may place its practitioner into a minority stance in a milieu of firmly held religious beliefs.
The term "freethought" came into existence in England toward the end of the seventeenth century, and the Oxford Dictionary notes that especially the deistic and other rejecters of Christianity claimed the "freethinker" designation at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
What we may not be cognizant of, however, is the extent to which their nonconforming freethought beliefs related to and resulted in the contributions for which we remember them.
