Fatima was the wife of Ali, the mother of Hasan and Husayn, and reputedly the ancestress of the Fatimids.
Fatimid (făt`ĭmĭd) or Fatimite (–ĭmīt), dynasty claiming to hold the caliphate caliph (kăl`ĭf'), the spiritual head and temporal ruler of the Islamic state.
In principle, Islam is theocratic: when Muhammad the Prophet died, a caliph [Arab.,=successor] was chosen to rule in his place.
