Fahd of Saudi Arabia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fahd had been appointed Crown Prince when Khalid succeeded their half-brother King Faisal, who was assassinated in 1975, and especially in the later years of Khalid's reign, Fahd was viewed as the de facto prime minister.
The Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 radically transformed the political landscape in the Middle East, as the hereditary monarchy of the Shah of Iran was deposed in favor of a religious autocracy based on Shari'a.
One of thirty-seven sons of Saudi founder Ibn Saud, and the fourth of his five sons who have ruled the Kingdom (Saud, Faisal, Khalid, Fahd, and Abdullah), Fahd ascended to the throne on the death of his half-brother, King Khalid, on June 13, 1982.

He is one of seven sons born to King Abd-al-Aziz's favourite wife - and as such is referred to as one of the Sudayri seven.
Also on the international stage, King Fahd has sought to highlight his country's privileged position of being situated on the land where Islam was born.

USATODAY.com - Saudi King Fahd dies in Riyadh hospital
Fahd, the son of the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, King Abdul-Aziz, got an elementary school education with a heavy emphasis on religion at a school set up by Abdul-Aziz for his 42 sons.
So Fahd took the title "custodian of the two holy mosques" — referring to Islam's holiest shrines at Mecca and Medina — and he poured millions of dollars into the religious establishment and into enlarging fundamentalist universities.
Visitors who saw King Fahd after his 1995 stroke reported he was barely aware of what was going on around him.

Saudi King Fahd, Western ally, 84 - The Boston Globe - Boston.com - Obituaries - News
King Fahd and his six brothers, the so-called ''Sudeiri Seven," were seen as something of an elite among the 44 male offspring of the king.
King Fahd is believed to leave two wives, eight sons, and five daughters.
Eager to avoid accusations that he and his family were ''munafaqeen," or hypocrites, King Fahd effectively prevented any departure from such traditional Islamic customs as women wearing veils and not being allowed to drive.

A Leader Who Fostered Progress Even as He Held to Insular Traditions
Fahd adopted that label in 1986, during a time when the kingdom was still recovering from its greatest domestic trauma, the 1979 seizure by religious fanatics of the Grand Mosque at Mecca, the holiest site in Islam, and Fahd was polishing his credentials as the protector and guarantor of the faith.
Within the Saudi royal family, however, Fahd was known as an affable compromiser who sought to restrain brothers and cousins who advocated even tougher measures to preserve the country's rigidly orthodox social and religious customs.
His government often resorted to harsh justice to keep his subjects in line, with public beheadings the preferred instrument of authority, and Fahd was widely criticized by Saudis and foreign residents alike for greatly increasing the authority of the country's conservative religious establishment in the 1980s.
