Topic: External total reflection

 A parabolic mirror x-ray collimator
A robust and stable x-ray collimator has been developed to produce a parallel beam of x-rays by total external reflection from a parabolic mirror.
Keywords: x-rays, total external reflection, parabolic mirror, bending mechanism
The width of the gold-coated silica mirror varies along its length, which allows it to be bent from a plane surface into a parabolic form by application of unequal bending forces at its ends.

Polymicro Technologies > Technical Support > Glossary
The condition resulting in total reflection from a glass/glass, glass/air or a glass/metal interface in which all of the light is reflected.
This is normally considered a bulk property, and does not include external losses such as fresnel reflections.
The first term is the reflection of light polarized in the plane of incidence, and the second the reflection for the other plane of polarization.

 Capillary X-ray Optics - Introduction
Grazing incidence optics depend on the phenomenon of total external reflection, but are restricted in their use because of their very small angular aperture, large size, or large focal length (2).
Total external reflection also allows x-rays to be transmitted through single straight or tapered hollow glass tubes in a manner analogous to visible light fiber optics (3).
Recently, a new type of x-ray optic, based on an assembly of a large number of hollow capillary tubes brought together to form a "Kumakhov lens," was invented in Moscow (4).

 Distillation
For example, if the external pressure above a substance is reduced to 1/16 of an atmosphere by mean of a mechanical pump, the boiling point will have been reduced four times by 10 °C for a total reduction of 40 °C (1 atm x (1/2)(1/2)(1/2)(1/2) =1/16 atm).
As an example lets choose a normal boiling point of 400 °C. Using the nomograph in Figure 2 and this temperature for reference, rotating the straight edge about this temperature will afford a continuous range of expected boiling points and the required external pressures necessary to achieve the desired boiling point.
Unlike pure materials, the boiling point of an impure liquid will change and this change is a reflection of the change in the composition of the liquid.

The effects of energy dependence of secondary radiation emission (SRE) followed by nuclear resonant and nonresonant photo-absorption at Mossbauer total external reflection (MTER) have been considered theoretically and checked experimentally.
It was shown that photoelectron yield plays the essential role in formation of the Mossbauer spectra of secondary electron total yield.
The spectrometer is intended for Mossbauer investigation of dynamic process in condensed media containing resonance isotope nuclei (selective excitation double Mossbauer effect, SEDM) or not (Rayleigh scattering of Mossbauer Radiation, RSMR).

Sheffield City Council - Planning Applications to South PHAB 31 August 2004
There is only a limited amount of garden space at the front and rear of the flats but the amount is a reflection of what has been accepted in other flat developments, so a consistent approach has been adopted.  The total amenity area available is 60 square metres.
A total of 24 parking spaces are proposed for the scheme which equates to one per flat with 5 visitor spaces and this complies to the parking guidelines for flats of 1 space per flat with 1 visitor space per 4 flats.
The external amenity space is considered adequate to serve the proposed development.

Archived: What the Research Says About Student Assessment
Any assessment of student achievement is unlikely to exert significant influence on instruction unless some stakes are attached to its results or teachers value the assessment as an accurate reflection of what students know and can do.
The very aspects of external testing programs that allow teachers to embed state assessment activities in regular classroom instruction--for example, tasks and administrative conditions that are not standardized and open-ended scoring rubrics targeted to higher-order thinking skills--are those that pose the greatest problems for states trying to meet existing standards of test validity and reliability.
If a student's disability is so severe as to prevent participation in the regular curriculum--with assistance and adaptive devices made available (1 to 2% of the total population of school children in Kentucky)--the students will participate in the KIRIS Alternate Portfolio Assessment process.

By adjusting the angle of incident X-rays from zero to some value slightly greater than the angle for total X-ray external reflection, it is possible to nondestructively probe the nature of the film depth profile.
Grazing incidence X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (GIXPS) can be used to obtain both chemical and structural information to describe the depth profile for a given ultrathin film.
The resulting angle dependent photoemission spectrum contains information that describes the physical properties of the sample, including density and thickness.
