Hale's purpose, as he says twice, is to show how alike were the times, the questions at issue, and the arguments of 1818-1820 and 1853-1854.

The Edward Everett Hale correspondence on non-Lend a Hand Society topics reflects the charitable and reform efforts taking place in Boston in the second half of the nineteenth century.
His letterbooks include not only Lend a Hand Society-related letters written by him but also letters written to him by people who were inspired by Ten Times One Is Ten to start clubs.
Following the publication of the story, groups sprang up to follow its example, setting as their ideal (and taking their name from) this verse of Hale's:

 Edward Everett Hale - Biography and Works
Hale's story "Ten Times One is Ten" (1870) contained the motto "Look up and not down, look forward and not back, look out and not in, and lend a hand" that was adopted by the Lend-a-Hand Clubs and Look-up Legions.
The Hale's moved to Boston in 1856, where Hale served as pastor with the South Congregational Church (until 1899).
He was ordained in 1846 and became a minister for the Congregationalist Church of the Unity in Worcester, Massachusetts (until 1856).

Notable amongst these are his letters to Richard Watson Gilder, editor of The Century and author of poetry books, and Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, author and editor of the Boston Commonwealth (1863-1867), Springfield Republican (1868-1914), and Journal of Social Sciences (1867-1897).
