Ecumenism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The World Council of Churches is an instrument in both the unifying ecumenical movement and the interfaith movement.
Christian ecumenism is the promotion of unity or cooperation between distinct religious groups or denominations of the Christian religion, broadly defined.
Ecumenism in this sense is called religious pluralism, as distinguished from ecumenism within a faith movement.

Newman and True Ecumenism Fr Peter Bristow
A long life during the nineteenth century taught him that not only was it essential to present a united front to the common enemy of secularism, but that the division of Christians was itself a principal cause of secularism.
Indeed, he himself actively sought personal conversions when he addressed his Difficulties of Anglicans to his former companions in the Oxford Movement, with the intention of persuading them that the true destination of the Movement was the Catholic Church.
And yet, once a Catholic, his ecumenical attitude did not stop him recognizing that he now belonged to "the Church of Christ" and consequently he saw no conflict between ecumenism and personal conversion "since they both proceed from the marvellous ways of God"

 CIRED>> CONCERNING ECUMENISM
In the catholic literature (I mean the term to include Roman and Anglo-Catholic), treatments of the Church of the East were typically overcast by the traditional understanding of the Nestorian "heresy" and by the horror of "schism".
But for the most part, such efforts had been based on negative evidence (both Protestants and Assyrians repudiated images, did not call the Blessed Virgin Mary "Mother of God", did not acknowledge the Pope, etc.), and they came from people who did not themselves claim to have a high doctrine of the church or sacraments.
We may begin with George Percy Badger (1815-88), the first Englishman to write about the Church of the East from real acquaintance, and also the first to make a serious case that its doctrine was not, from a catholic point of view, heretical.
