Eastern Orthodox Church - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eastern Orthodox ecclesiology is "Christocentric", viewing Christ Jesus as the head of the Church, and the Church as his body; with authority derived directly from this relationship.
However it is important to note that they are not part of the Eastern Orthodox Church as these churches are in communion with Rome and submit to the supremacy of the Pope, many of them having gone into schism from the Eastern Orthodox Church or one of the Oriental Orthodox Churches.
The term "Orthodox" was adopted by the Eastern Church to signify its adherence to, and preservation of, the original apostolic traditions, teachings, and style of worship.

Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church
Eastern Catholic Churches are at times insultingly called “uniate” Churches, meaning that they gave in to pressure to unite with Rome.
This is being written with a recognition that, in the United States at least, many Latin Rite Catholics forget that the Eastern Catholic Churches are part of the same Catholic Church.
The Maronite Church is the only Eastern Church that has no Orthodox counterpart.

 Eastern Catholic
Eastern Catholic Churches are groups of Christians whose traditions are based on the style of Constantinople but are in union with the church of Rome.
The Eastern Christians are most often called "Greek" because of the Greek empires in the eastern Mediterranean, but a more accurate term would be Byzantine Christians since their style of worship was patterned after the church at Byzantium.
The unfortunate Eastern Schism or the breaking away of the Eastern Church from the Pope, the successor of St. Peter and Vicar of Christ on earth, started under the Greek patriarch Photius of Constantinople in 879, and was consummated by his distant successor Cerularious, also patriarch of Constantinople, in 1054.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Eastern Churches
Eastern Churches depend originally on the Eastern Empire at Constantinople ; they are those that either find their centre in the patriarchate of that city (since the centralization of the fourth century) or have been formed by schisms which in the first instance concerned Constantinople rather than the Western world.
Eastern Church, 326); the ludicrous scandal at Monastir, in Macedonia, when they fought over a dead man's body and set the whole town ablaze because some wanted him to be buried in Greek and some in Rumanian (op.
They were given bishops and patriarchs of their own as successors of the old Catholic Eastern bishops before the schism, and they became what all Eastern Christians had once been -- Catholics.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Eastern Schism
However, the Eastern Schism always means that most deplorable quarrel of which the final result is the separation of the vast majority of Eastern Christians from union with the Catholic Church, the schism that produced the separated, so-called "Orthodox" Church.
If the four Eastern patriarchs agreed upon any course it was practically a foregone conclusion that their metropolitans and bishops would follow them and that the priests and people would follow the bishops.
Indeed, the falling away of so many hundreds of Eastern bishops, of so many millions of simple Christians, is explained sufficiently by the schism of the patriarchs.

The Catholic Church IS, most assuredly, one--in her beliefs and in her doctrines.
Eastern Rite celebrants, on the other hand, have *always* sung the words of consecration aloud, after which the congregation sings its own affirming "Amen," expressing their own faith and belief in the Real Presence, and their willing choice to participate in the renewal of Christ's Eucharistic Sacrifice.
Those not in union with the Catholic Church are customarily called "Orthodox" while those united to the Catholic Church are called "Eastern Catholics," or one of the other sub-denominators such as "Ruthenian," "Ukrainian," "Hungarian," and so on.

 Eastern Rite Churches, Uniate Churches
Eastern Rite churches are communities of eastern Christians in union with the Roman Catholic church.
Distinct from both the Orthodox churches and the so-called Independent churches of the East, neither of which recognize papal primacy, the Eastern Rite churches are also sometimes known as Eastern Catholic, or Uniate, churches.
The Eastern Rite Churches are Eastern Christian churches consisting of five rites derived from ancient traditions of Christian churches in the East.

The holy Catholic Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ, is made up of the faithful who are organically united in the Holy Spirit by the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same government.
In view of the principles just noted, Eastern Christians who are separated in good faith from the Catholic Church, if they are rightly disposed and make such request of their own accord, may be given the Sacraments of Penance, the Eucharist, and the anointing of the Sick.
Those who by reason of their office or apotolic ministry have frequent dealings with the Eastern Churches or their faithful should be instructed as their office demands in theoretical and practical knowledge of the rites, discipline, doctrine, history, and character of the members of the Eastern Churches.

Our Eastern Catholic brothers and sisters are very conscious of being the living bearers of this tradition, together with our Orthodox brothers and sisters.
