 Disestablishment or Desacralization
The disestablishment of the Church or the desacralization of the State?
The heart of the debate is not about what will happen to the social status of Church of England clergy, nor who will grab hold of the assets, nor what it might mean ecumenically for other churches in this country.
The political implications of a desacralized State are far more interesting than the religious implications of a disestablished Church, for we already have several examples of these, whether Roman or Methodist or, not so far away, the Church in Wales.

The Church of England and "Establishment"
In the nineteenth century, the Free (or "Nonconformist") Churches, that is the non-Anglican Protestant churches in England, often sought the disestablishment of the Church of England.
In England the Church of England disapproves of the remarriage in church of divorced persons, but the Church of Scotland has different views, and so Princess Anne was able to marry in a Scottish church entirely legitimately.
Perhaps even more interestingly, some non-Christian religious leaders have also chosen a position of antidisestablishmentarianism, considering that disestablishment would advance secularism rather than religious pluralism.

House of Commons Hansard Debates for 25 Jan 1999 (pt 5)
Even if the Church is not yet persuaded of the merits of disestablishment, will the hon.
Many people in this country think that it is wrong to have an established Church and that it would be helpful if England followed the example of Scotland and Wales and disestablished its Church, recognising that we are a multicultural, multi-faith society and that no religion or Church should be given pre-eminence over others.
Friend said that this is a multi-faith, multicultural society, and that point is accepted not only by the Church of England but by the multiple faiths to which he refers.

Yet at the same time, the principled tradition of dissent has been increasingly replaced by the non-religious, or even anti-religious forces of renascent secular humanism, calling for disestablishment of religion and the radical separation of faith from public life.
Is it a fundamental requirement that the Church is completely free to govern itself?
Support for repeal has also come from several other sources, both inside and outside the Anglican Church.

 Disestablishment
The intimate connection which existed in the mediaeval world between the church and society has disintegrated as the secularization of the state has proceeded.
Almost every church and religious organization is established to the extent that they depend on Acts of Parliament for the protection of their places of worship, their charitable foundations and their pension funds.
The Church has been disestablished in Ireland and in Wales, and in countless other reforms the Church of England has lost its monopoly, leaving little of its ancient privileges beyond the smile on the Cheshire cat.

 United Press International: Anglosphere: Anti-disestablishmentarianism
Not surprisingly, the Church has seen growing discussion of the need to disestablish itself.
Interestingly enough, this parallel continues to be instructive today, as both the Church of England and the BBC are increasingly subject to debate over whether they should be disestablished.
However, it is a topic heard far more today than just, say, five years ago.

 Church And State: Three Lectures.
One of the parties includes all who plead for Disestablishment on the theory that the State should not have anything to do with religion.
Another includes those who regard the present Established Church in her relations with the State as an ideal Establishment, and as the embodiment of all contended for in the brightest period of the Scottish Reformation.
The conflict of opinion about the Established Church exhibits the existence of three parties, between whom the lines of separation are being ever more clearly defined.

Why we need an Established Church of England
Libertarians, whom one might expect to stand up for diversity, may make matters even worse, in their calls for the separation of church and state, and the disestablishment of the Church of England.
Simply this: the established church is part of what makes up the nation.
The persons who make up the British people have common rights in it.
