Thomas Lewis O'Beirne was appointed Bishop of Meath in 1798.
A 'Commission on Church Buildings' was established by the General Synod, and in the Diocese of Meath and Kildare, it recommended 29 Church closures.
In 1965, the process began in the Diocese of Meath and Churches such as: Kilshine, Balrathboyne, Kilbeggan, Kilmessan, Collinstown, Castletown-Kilpatrick, Painestown, Stackallen and Laracor were all closed and de-consecrated.

Charles Stewart Parnell's affair with Kitty O'Shea lead to the Bishop of Meath having a letter read at Mass in the diocese in condemnation of the relationship.
As Parnell was quite popular this caused a backlash which eventually lead to the seat and bishop going to Mullingar, County Westmeath permanently.
