 Digambaras
To the Digambaras, the embryo of Mahavira was not removed from the womb of Devananda to that of Trisala, as the Shvetambaras believe, and they do not follow the Shvetambara account of Mahavira being married and living the life of the householder until he was thirty.
Most Digambaras are image-worshippers, except for the sects of the Terapanthis (Terahapanthis) and the Taranapanthis.
The Digambaras disown the Shvetambara canon, claiming that these texts were gradually lost during the first centuries after the Nirvana, death, of Mahavira.

 WELCOME: WWW.JAINSAMAJ.ORG
Digambaras also deny two of the Shvetambara beliefs about Mahavira, that Mahavira's embryo was taken from the womb of the Brahamana woman Devananda and transferred to the womb of Trishala, and also that Mahavira had married and had a daughter.
The Digambaras called their Church, the Mula Sangha or the Main Church.
The main schisms of the Jaina Church was the one between the Shvetambaras and the Digambaras.

Solitary Path of the Jain Digambara - Articles - House of Hermits - Hermitary
But the fact that both the Shvetambara and the Digambara accept the belief that Mahavira, the great Jain sage-founder of the sixth century BCE was naked does suggest a later pragmatism that split the monks and created the white-clad order.
The monks of Jainism are of two traditions: Shvetambara and Digambara.
Digambara means sky-clad, and refers to the fact that the males of this order are without clothes.

 Kanji Svami Panth
Lacking a place in any Digambara ascetic lineage descending from Kundakunda, Kanji Svami validated his teaching authority by claiming in a previous life in Mahavideha (in Jain cosmography this is at the centre of the island of Jambudvipa) to have been present when Kundakunda visited to listen to the Jina Simandhara.
Though trained as a Sthanakvasi monk, Kanji Svami turned to Digambara Jainism and the mainstream Digambara mystical tradition centred on Kundakunda became the basis of the doctrine of his sect.
This linking of Kanji Svami with this legendary event was told to him by a female disciple, Campabahen Mataji, who said she had been there too hearing Simandhara expound the true doctrine to Kundakunda.

 Digambara Terapanthis
Banarsidass, an important lay Digambara leader in the seventeenth century, came under the influence of Kundakunda's Essence of the Doctrine, written in the second or third century CE, and the monk Nemicandra's Essence of Gomata, a Digambara doctrinal digest written in the ninth century.
During this collapse of his outer life he even pretended in private with friends to be naked Digambara monks.
But with the influence of Nemicandra he found spiritual harmony and self-realisation, from which basis he practised lay rituals.

 History of Digambar jaina
Many Digambara lists including the Sravana Belgola inscription say that Gautama's successor as the head of the Church was Lohacharya.
Samantabhadra: According to a pattavalli given in an inscription of 1163 AD at Sravana Belgola, Umasvati's disciple was Balakapiccha, and his disciple was Samantabhadra.
This proves that not only was the tower raised by a Digambara merchant, but also that the practice of claiming descent from the line of Kundakunda, a practice quite common in South India, had spread to north by the 13th century.

 Welcome to Multifaithnet - Jainism
Digambara Jains see some of this material as the basis for the Shat Khanda-Agama (the Scripture in Six Parts), whilst Shvetambara Jains believe this material to have been lost.
Digambara (meaning "sky-clad") monks have no property, although they can carry a whisk-broom of peacock-feathers and a gourd for water to wash with.

 The Digambara and Svetambara sects
Digambaras believe that a woman lacks the adamantine body and rigid will necessary to attain moksa, i.e., liberation: hence she must be reborn as a man before such an attainment is possible.
The Svetambara monks collect their food from different houses while the Digambara monks take food standing and with the help of knotted upturned palms and in one house only where their sankalpa (preconceived idea) is fulfilled.
Literally, the monks of the Digambaras are naked while those of the Svetambaras wear white clothes.

 WELCOME : www.jainsamaj.org
The Bisapantha, according to some, is the original form of the Digambara sect and today practically all Digambara Jainas from Maharashtra, Karnataka and South India and a large number of Digambara Jainas from Rajasthan and Gujarat are the followers of Bisapantha.
It is interesting to note that the two non-idolatrous sub-sects, viz., Taranapanthis among the Digambaras and Sthanakvasi among the Svetambaras, came very late in the history of the Jaina Church and to some extent it can safely be said that the Mohammedan influence on the religious mind of India was greatly responsible for their rise.
Besides the sacred books of the Digambaras, they also worship the fourteen sacred books written by their founder Tarana-Svami.

BBC - Religion & Ethics - Jain Living
Digambara monks live on the charity of others, but since they are not allowed even to own a bowl, they receive contributions in their cupped hands.
Svetambara monks wear thin white robes while the Digambara monks reject any form of clothing whatsoever and live naked, or 'sky clad'.
Jain monks and nuns should live the simplest and most austere lives, as this prescription of the qualities of a monk shows.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/jainism/living/living7.shtml

Was the impact of Early Indian Christianity on Jainism the cause of the split into Digambara and Svetambara?
The Digambara believe that the original is lost but that the substance of Jaina doctrine has been preserved in a variety of religious and philosophic texts written by various leaders and scholars of the Jaina community over the centuries.
The only schism to have a lasting effect was that between the Svetambaras (Sanskrit literally, "White-robed") and the Digambaras (Sanskrit "Sky-clad"; i.e., naked); this division still exists.
This is in contrast to the practice followed by the parallel sect, the Digambara, which does not admit women into the ascetic order and whose monks are always nude.
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/2104/jainism.html

 Title of System
Digambara also find no evidence in the scriptures that permits women to attain moksa, and use this to further their cause.
Digambaras believe that women cannot reach nirvana, while the
Svetambaras steadfastly maintain that both sexes can attain spiritual liberation.

The emphasis for worship among Digambara Terapanthis is the scriptue.
Most of Kanji Svami's beliefs were identical to Digambara beliefs and focused on the value of doctrine.
The king of the gods, Sakra, did not feel that Mahavira should be born to a low caste woman, however, and Mahavira was transplanted into the womb of a ksatriya (warrior caste) woman.

Digambara means, "sky clad," or to be "adorned with sky." Thus monastics of the Digambara sect own absolutely no possesions and walk naked.
Liberation of Women: In the Digambara sect it is not possible for women to reach moksa because they cannot walk naked and because they are himsic in nature.
Content of the Scripture: Disputes between Svetambaras and Digambaras over the sacred texts began in 3BC at the council of Pataliputra and continued until 501AD at the council of Valabhi.

Mahavira was not the founder of Jainism, and, in fact, most of the non-Jain evidence that supports this comes from the writings of the Ajivika and Buddhist traditions (that from the former being in the form of quotations from the latter).
Setting aside the fact of that Digambara Jain monks and Ajivika ascetics wore no clothes, could you please delineate and describe the philosophical similarities between the Digambara Jain tradition and the Ajivikas, ones which could not ALSO be drawn between the Shvetambara Jain tradition and the Ajivikas as well?
If there exists any evidence to the contrary, or if there is any nineteenth or twentieth century book which says this, I would appreciate it if you could inform me as to where it is written.

Voluntary death by the withdrawal of nourishment is, according to the strict doctrine of the Digambara, necessary for all ascetics, who have reached the highest step of knowledge.
They do not, however, present a compact mass, but are divided into two rival branches—the _Digambara_ and _Śvetâmbara_ [Footnote: In notes on the Jainas, one often finds the view expressed, that the _Digambaras_ belong only to the south, and the _Śvetâmbaras_ to the north.

The Bhattarakas of Shravanabelgola and Mudabidri
At this time, because of the continued presence of the institute and the collection of ancient books, Mudabidri is perhaps regarded as the main seat of orthodoxy in the Digambara tradition.
In both Digambara and Svetambara traditions, the organizations of such stationary institutions, called Mathas, came under criticism by other monks who rigorously adhered to the original ideals [3].
The Bhattarakas remain a mystery even to the Jains in India.

Along with Hinduism and Buddhism, it is one of the three most ancient Indian religious traditions still in existence, it is not a Hindu sect or Buddhist heresy, as earlier scholars believed.
Jainism has two principal quite different branches, the Digambara (Sanskrit 'Sky-clad', naked) and the Svetambara (Sanskrit 'White robed') Jains.
Digambara worship idols in temples, whereas Svetambara are not practising idolatry and do not have temples.

HERE-NOW4U :Dr. Peter Flügel on 'Jainism - A Pictorial Guide to the Religion of Non-Violence' by Kurt Titze
From Maharashtra the imaginary traveller heads north, to Delhi and Hastinapur, then turning south to Rajasthan joining a “Grand Tour” of the famous Jain temples of southern Rajasthan and northern Gujarat, then on to Gujarat and Kutch, and finally to Bihar - the region in which Jainism and Buddhism originated.
However, by including several articles or extracts from books by Klaus Bruhn, Jyoti Prasad Jain, Noel Q. King, Vilas A. Sangave and other leading experts in this field, the author interspersed the main text with more detailed background information on selected subjects, such as the philosophy and meaning of worship in Jainism.
The majority of the photographs in this pictorial guide to Jainism show Digambara Jain temples and their interior in isolated mountain sites, which were originally sanctified by the practice of sallekhana, or religious death through self-starvation.

 Religions of India
Today most Jains in southern India follow the Digambara sects, while most in the north follow Svetambara sects.
The Digambara (atmosphere-clad, or naked) and the Svetambara (white-clad) split about 360 B.C. A severe famine caused one group of Jain ascetics to migrate south.
When these naked southern Jains returned north, the northern monks had begun to wear a piece of cloth over their genitals.

In the forties, the libraries of the Indian province of Tamil were crammed with "thuppariyum kathaigal" (detective stories) which caught the attention of thousands of readers.
DIGAMBARA SWAMIYAR was the hero (and title) of a very popular Indian detective novel of the 1950's, which dealt with the adventures of a "sanyasi" (or holy man) turned private eye.
In true pulp tradition, Digambara wore all kinds of disguises and performed great feats of courage in order to unmask the villains.
