Heroes of the Gem - Lancre
Lancre built and heads the Church of Mordant in Slumber and was the designer of the great Cathedral of the Gods in Mordanton.
Although Lancre cannot claim title to Highest Brother of the Church of Mordant, he is certainly one of the more accomplished and respected Brothers and his deeds on the Quest of the Gem merely add to his stature.
When Lancre was given rulership of one of the five Cantons of Slumber, he quickly established a haven for fellow Mordants to come and practice their religion, and Mordants did indeed come from far and wide, even as far as Lochnirr on the Isle of Onlor.

Terry Pratchett - Carpe Jugulum excerpt
Despite the earnest efforts of King Verence, who was quite a forward-looking ruler in a nervous kind of way, the people of Lancre could not be persuaded to accept a democracy at any price and the place had not, regrettably, attracted much in the way of government.
The people of Lancre had heard of this.
She'd heard that this was depressing King Verence, who was teaching himself kinging out of books.

 d_Devil's Possessed review
De lancre welcomes Malebranche with open arms, but Gaston has become weary of the Baron's new practices and intentions.
Here Naschy is good as unbalanced Baron Gilles de Lancre, a disgruntled French ruler who has been all but disowned by the King he once valiantly fought for.
In order to fulfill this dream, de Lancre must go through the task of sacrificing seven young maidens on seven Saturdays, and then repeat the process once more.

Buber's Basque Page: Basque Mythology: Witchcraft
Iribarren theorizes that these phenomena usually occur in places subject «to the druidic influence of the forests and caves», and observes that, in the Ribera, the most favorable places are the ones that possess caves, by "the mystery inherent in darkness".
At the beginning of last century, a charlatan attracted large multitudes of laborers from Laburdi, most from Ascain and Sara, who came with their animals so that they could be blessed and exorcised.
As for the origins of witchcraft, the most curious authors are those who look for the first roots in non-Basque places, that is to say, foreign to the country.

Amazon.com: Books: Carpe Jugulum: A Novel of Discworld
When the goodhearted king invited the Magpyrs to celebrate the birth of his daughter, he couldn't know that these modern bloodsuckers would have no intention of leaving.
Of course, Lancre did once have a king named, 'My God He's Heavy the First.'
Her friend and fellow-witch, Nanny Ogg is upset by King Verence's choice of a priest of Om as the official baptizer--a priest who relies on bits of strategically placed paper to jog his uncertain memory--which is how the little princess ends up with the name 'Esmerelda Margaret Note Spelling of Lancre.'

They do however have firm opinions on what religion should sound like, which is pretty much like a Latin Roman Catholic service.
King My God He's Heavy I (Dates unkown, mentioned in Carpe Jugulum; victim of Lancre's peculiarly strict naming customs, which dictate that a child's name must be that spoken by the officiating priest, whatever it is he may actually have said)
The current king of Lancre is Verence II.

 Marks of a Witch
Judges should always, when suspects are presented to them, pull out hair and shave, where occasion shall serve, all the body over, lest haply the mark may lurk ender the hair in any place”.
Not all of them got away with such tactics however, indeed one of them ended up on the gallows himself because of his evil deeds.
Ludovico Maria Sinistrari in his De Demonialitate similarly believed that: “The demon imprints on the witches some mark, especially on those whose constancy he suspects.

 BOOKS ON OCCULT HISTORY
Without the spiritualist movement and the amazing personality of Helena P. Blavatsky, the creator of the Theosophical Society, the spiritual revolution of the 20th century - the so-called New Age - would be unimaginable.
Steiner moves into the realm of occult history, where he relates Theosophy to its historical ground in Western esotericism, especially Rosicrucianism.
And the work of Rudolf Steiner, G.I. Gurdjieff, Schwaller de Lubicz, and C.G. Jung could not have become what it was.

 RPGClassics.com - Quotes - Terry Pratchett
So does RELIGION, but science is better because it comes up with more understandable excuses when it is wrong.
Witches generally act as layers-out of the dead as well as midwives; there were plenty of people in Lancre for whom Nanny Ogg's face had been the first and last thing they'd ever seen, which had probably made all the bit in the middle seem quite uneventful by comparison.
William de Worde is the Discworld's first newspaper editor, and he's got a hell of a time ahead of him.

 Lords & Ladies
Something needs to be said here about the three witches of Lancre, recurring characters in all the Granny Weatherwax books, and such integral figures that I should really refer to them as the Witches books.
As is the case with many Pratchett books, there are multiple plots that all center around the Elves and their newest attempt to gain the Discworld as their own world.
But many years ago, she was a headstrong young girl who was offered power by a mysterious woman in red who stood in the center of a stone circle and couldn't leave it.

 Mass Hysteria
It never occurred to de Lancre that there might well have been a perfectly, more or less, natural explanation such as mass hysteria.
In both of these cases it was believed as well that the women were bewitched, and at least one of those accused was burned to death tied to the stake.
Brought before de Lancre, she was looking at paintings in his room when his officers brought the accused witches into the building.

Verence II of Lancre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is assumed that this means he is the son of the elder Fool's wife and Verence I (who was fond of exercising his droit de seigneur), and he is duly crowned Verence II.
Verence II is a very well-meaning king, who takes running a kingdom very seriously (he takes most things seriously, having learnt at a very early age that being a Fool was no laughing matter), but things seldom turn out the way he might want.
In Lords and Ladies Verence and Magrat finally marry, and in Carpe Jugulum they have a daughter (Princess Esmeralda Margaret Note Spelling of Lancre).

 Inquisitor - Pierre De Lancre

 Lancre
Lancre seems to be one of those tiny places made specifically for making people who leave for the big cities and become famous.
The kingdom is currenly ruled by King Verence II and Queen Magrat Garlick.
The only town is Lancre Town, but there are several small villages - Slice, Razorback, Mad Stoat, Bad Ass, Skund, and Brass Neck.

 Terry Pratchett, Carpe Jugulum
Lancre's witches to save their homeland from the vampyres, who have developed new techniques to overcome many traditional vampyric weaknesses and who have decided to take over Lancre and turn it to their purposes.
Add an evangelical but confused priest, pixies (or pictsies) who steal cattle, and a traditionalist Igor who doesn't hold with the New Vampyre....
It's a wild ride, and we get to learn more about Lancre, Nanny's family, the nature of witchcraft on the Disc, and in what ways belief does -- and doesn't -- affect reality (or whatever passes for it in Discworld!).

Maria de Ximildegui in The Summerlands
In fact, she said that she could prove it, if she could speak to Maria.
Four years later, just as Pierre de Lancre's Witch craze was beginning, Maria returned to her home town and found work as a servant.
Esteve took her back to his farm and called his wife outside.

 Welcome to lancre.net
Lancre: A small kingdom of around 200 souls, well maybe more than 200 souls, but about that number of people (if you count trolls and dwarfs as people).
It may be found perched on the Sto Plains side of the Ramtop mountains and has produced at least one archchancellor of the unseen university.
http://www.lancre.net

 Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies
Pratchett's elves are nasty critters, and he doesn't mind saying so, but his point of view is supported by the folklore which indicates that elves consider human beings as a kind of animal made available for their amusement.
All Magrat has to do is start learning how to be a queen, which, as she discovers, has a lot to do with tapestries and complicated clothing.
This means that Lords and Ladies isn't one of Pratchett's more riotously funny books; it has more weight, but it never gets too serious.
