A principle that is fundamental to the faith of the Dawoodi Bohras is that an Imam, a descendent of the Prophet, has to exist on earth.
In 1539 AD, Syedna Yusuf Najmuddin of Sidhpur became the Dai and the headquarters of the Dawoodi Bohra faith shifted from Yemen to India.
Around 1132 AD, the 21st Imam, al Tayib, chose to go into seclusion and appointed the Dai (head priest) to operate on his behalf.
