 DALMATIC
In the Eastern churches the only vestment that has any true analogy with the dalmatic or liturgical upper tunic is the sakkos, the tunic worn by deacons and subdeacons over their everyday clothes being the equivalent of the Western aib (q.v.).
According to the actual use of the Roman Catholic Church dalmatic and tunicle are worn by deacon and subdeacon when assisting at High Mass, and at solemn processions and benedictions.
They are, however, traditionally vestments sym-, bolical of joy (the bishop in placing the, dalmatic on.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Dalmatic
As the dalmatic is the distinguishing outer vestment of the deacon, he is clothed with it at his ordination by the bishop, who at the same time says: "May the Lord clothe thee with the garment of salvation and with the vesture of praise, and may he cover thee with the dalmatic of righteousness forever".
About the ninth century the dalmatic was adopted almost universally for bishops and deacons in Western Europe, even including Spain and Gaul, where instead of a dalmatic deacons had worn a tunic called an alb.
What in later times was said of the symbolism of the dalmatic is hardly more than a repetition of the words of Rabanus and Amalarius.

 Catholic Encyclopedia: Deacons
On the other hand it is practically certain that dalmatics were worn in Rome both by the pope and by his deacons in the latter half of the fourth century.
constituit ut diaconi dalmaticis in ecclesia uterentur (ordained that deacons should use dalmatics in church), but this statement is quite unreliable.
It is noteworthy that in the "Decretum pro Armenis" of Pope Eugene IV the delivery of the Gospels is spoken of as the "matter" of the diaconate, Diaconatus vero per libri evangeliorum dationem (traditur).

The Coronation Robes of the Sovereign
The Romans wore them, and it was later adopted as a liturgical vestment by the Church, but replaced subsequently by the dalmatic.
It is only in the twelfth century that a surviving order mentions the coronation vestments.
It is thought to be derived from the robes of the Church rather than from those of the emperors, although they also wore the colobium sindonis.

More solemn occasions would include bishops' Masses, feasts and solemnities and sung Masses.
Elliot, in his book Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite, comments that "Although it is optional, the amice has a certain hygienic and practical value, especially when priests share the same albs.
Is the deacon required, like the priest, to wear an amice under the alb?

 Dalmatic
The dalmatic is the major liturgical vestment of a deacon, taking the place of a priest's chasuble.
Bishops wear it under the chasuble at feasts of major solemnity.
Each cardinal wears the damask mitre, required for members of the Sacred College in presence of the Pope.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Tunic
Not until the twelfth century did it become general for the bishop to wear both vestments at the same time, that is, the tunic as well as the dalmatic.
The bishop himself puts the tunic on the newly-ordained subdeacon with the words: "May the Lord clothe thee with the tunic of joy and the garment of rejoicing.
The ceremony in which the bishop, after the ordination places the tunic upon the newly-ordained subdeacon had its origin in the twelfth century, but even in the thirteenth century it was only customary in isolated cases.

St.Matthew and St.John the Evangalist Parish
The Ordination service was held on December 8, 2000, the Feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Saint Sylvester (AD 330) decreed that the deacons of the Roman Catholic Church should assume the dalmatic instead of the shorter tunic, the collobion, which they had formerly worn.
The dalmatic used in this liturgy was borrowed from the Parish of St. Michael and All Angels, St. John's.

 Vesting Prayers - 1970 Missal
As he puts on the dalmatic he may say the following prayer taken from the vesting prayers of a bishop.
Lord, restore the stole of immortality, which I lost through the collusion of our first parents, and, unworthy as I am to approach Thy sacred mysteries, may I yet gain eternal joy.
A deacon may also use these prayers when he vests.

 Saints of December 26
How many countless thousands of holy men and women were to follow the first martyr St. Stephen, who persevered in death, proclaiming that the faith that they had professed in life and thus entering with him into their eternal reward (Attwater, Benedictines, Bentley, Coleridge, Delaney, Encyclopedia, Murray, White).
In art he is shown vested as a deacon, holding a book or a palm; or carrying stones; or with stones resting on his book of the Gospels; or with stones gathered in the folds of his dalmatic.
In several unusual pieces, he is shown (1) in a coffin with Abibas, Gamaliel, and Nicodemus around him; (2) his body guarded by animals; (3) preaching to the Jews

During the ordination ceremony, the deacon formally receives his dalmatic, and it is placed on him by an assisting deacon or priest.
By the 11th century, the church designated the dalmatic as a vestment proper to them.
Although the dalmatic is generally identified with deacons, it remains a vestment which may be worn by bishops as well.
