Saint Cyril - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cyril was canonized as a saint by the eastern Church, with the Roman Catholic Church canonizing him separately in 1880 along with Methodius.
Cyril's feast day is celebrated on February 14 (Roman Church) or May 11 (Orthodox Church).
Cyril also took an active role in relations with the other two great monotheistic religions, Islam and Judaism.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Cyril of Alexandria
Cyril has his feast in the Western Church on the 28th of January; in the Greek Menaea it is found on the 9th of June, and (together with St. Athanasius) on the 18th of January.
The second letter of Cyril to Nestorius was approved by all the bishops.

And in one Holy Ghost, the Paraclete, Who spake by the prophets; and in one baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, and in one holy Catholic Church, and in the resurrection of the body, and in life everlasting.
Cyril never actually calls the Holy Ghost God, but He is to be honoured together with the Father and the Son (Cat.
Cyril teaches the Divinity of the Son with perfect plainness, but avoids the word "consubstantial", which he probably thought liable to misunderstanding.

Istria on the Internet - Linguistics - Glagolitic - Saints Cyril & Methodius
Cyril died in Rome in 869 and is buried in the Church of San Clemente.
The Cyrillic letters used in writing it are adaptations of the uncial Greek alphabet, with the addition of a number of new letters to express sounds not found in the greek language.
We rightly praise the Slavonic letters invented by Cyril in which praises to God are set forth, and we order that the glories and deeds of Christ our Lord be told in that same language.

 351 St. Cyril of Jerusalem
Cyril, born about 315, was raised in Jerusalem and as a cleric in the church of Jerusalem caught the attention of Bishop Macarius who ordained him a deacon, and of Bishop Maxmimus who ordained him a priest about 342.
As bishop Cyril continued as he had done as deacon and priest and gave the Lenten and Easter catechizing, copies of which prove him to be 100% orthodox.
Cyril was probably present when Bishop Maximus presided over a synod of 16 priests to welcome and approve Athanasius as he passed through on his way back to Alexandria.

Saint Cyril was as full of faith and fiery zeal in his tenacious stand against Nestorius as Saint Athanasius had been against Arius.
Saint Cyril wrote letters to Nestorius urging him to stop promoting an idea which is equivalent to blasphemy, but the later obstinately refused to be convinced that he had fallen into a heretic way of thinking.
Saint Cyril also wrote another letter to Nestorius with an exposition of the Nicene Creed and a second part, an affirmation of the true faith, followed by 12 anathemas.

Cyril himself was probably born, or at least brought up, in or near Jerusalem, for it was usual to choose a Bishop from among the Clergy over whom he was to preside, a preference being given to such as were best known to the people generally
The present translation of the Catechetical Lectures of S. Cyril of Jerusalem is based on a careful revision of the English translation published in the “Library of the Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church,” with a most interesting Preface by John Henry Newman, dated from Oxford, The Feast of St. Matthew, 1838.
The tradition that Cyril had been a monk and an ascetic was probably founded upon the passages in which he seems to speak as one who had himself belonged to the order of Solitaries, and shared the glory of chastity

Lives of the Saints, February 9, Saint Cyril of Alexandria, St. Apollonia
In 430 Cyril became embroiled with Nestorius, patriarch of Constantinople, who was preaching that Mary was not the Mother of God since Christ was divine and not human, and consequently She should not have the word Theotokos (God-bearer) applied to Her.
Born at Alexandria, Egypt, and nephew of the patriach of that city, Theophilus, Cyril received a classical and theological education at Alexandria and was ordained by his uncle.
During the rest of his life Cyril wrote treatises that clarified the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation and that helped prevent Nestorianism and Pelagianism from taking long-term deep root in the Christian community.

The Writings of Cyril of Alexandria
John of Antioch and several churches in his region had broken communion with Alexandria after what was perceived as the errant policy and practice at Ephesus.
Cyril responded with a focussed insistence on the absolute oneness of the incarnate Christ: there is ever and only a single subject to the 'who' of the incarnate Word -- the 'Word made flesh', as indicated by John (Jn 1.14).
Using a phrase he believed to come from Athanasius, but which in fact came from Apollinarius (by Cyril's time officially deemed anathema), Cyril argued that the incarnational becoming results in mia physis tou Theou Logou sesarkomene - 'one incarnate nature of God the Word'.
