 Homily - SS. Cyril & Methodius - February 14, 2004
Cyril was a monk and Methodius a bishop who labored to bring the teaching of the Gospel and the Liturgy of the Church to the Slavic peoples.
Cyril and Methodius were brothers, siblings who lived during the mid 800s before the split between the Eastern and Western Church, between Catholics and Orthodox.
From the traditions of local churches, rather than universal, we have the commemoration of a Roman priest named Valentine, who was apprehended and refusing to denounce his faith was commanded to be beaten to death with clubs and afterwards beheaded on February 14.

Encyclopedia Coptica: The Christian Coptic Orthodox Church Of Egypt
Saint Cyril, Pope of Alexandria, was the head of the Ecumenical Council which was held in Ephesus in the year 430 A.D. It was said that the bishops of the Church of Alexandria did nothing but spend all their time in meetings.
There are three main Liturgies in the Coptic Church: The Liturgy according to Saint Basil, Bishop of Caesarea ; The Liturgy according to Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople; and The Liturgy according to Saint Cyril I, the 24th Pope of the Coptic Church.
It was memorized by the Bishops and priests of the church till it was translated into the Coptic Language by Saint Cyril.

 Pope Cyril VI
Before him, five popes of Alexandria bore the name Kyrillos (Cyril); the first of them was Saint Cyril the Great of Alexandria, the pillar of faith, who acted against Nestorianism and used the title Theotokos, meaning God bearer, or Mother of God, for the Virgin Mary.
On March 9, the Coptic Orthodox Church remembers the departure of the Great Pope (Papa, Ava) Kyrillos (Cyril) VI, the 116th Pope of Alexandria and successor of Saint Mark the Evangelist.
He would start the day spiritually at 3:00 or 4:00 am with the Holy Psalmody and finish the liturgy early so that many of his children can go to school and work.

The Confession of Dositheus @ ELCore.Net
For ancient custom, or rather the Catholic Church, which hath delivered to us as genuine the Sacred Gospels and the other Books of Scripture, hath undoubtedly delivered these also as parts of Scripture, and the denial of these is the rejection of those.
It is evident, therefore, that the Scriptures are very profound, and their sense lofty; and that they need learned and divine men to search out their true meaning, and a sense that is right, and agreeable to all Scripture, and to its author the Holy Spirit.
And the order which is there observed will be followed in these which will be put forth by us, so that each of the Faithful may be able to compare, and judge of both, and easily know the Orthodoxy of the Eastern Church, and the falsehood of the heretics.

ST. CYRIL'S "ONE PHYSIS OR HYPOSTASIS OF GOD THE LOGOS INCARNATE" AND CHALCEDON
Cyril is clearly seen in the recording opinions of the bishops and reflected in the Chalcedonian definition itself.
The Chalcedonian Orthodox, on the other hand, believe that it was Cyril's Christology which was not only fully accepted at Ephesus, but served as the basis of all judgments concerning Christology at Ghalcedon in 451 and especially at Constantinople in 553.
It should be noted that One Hypostasis of God the Logos Incarnate and not One Physis of God the Logos Incarnate is to be found in Cyril's Third Letter to Nestorius approved by Ephesus and Chalcedon.

 THE EASTERN CHURCHES & PATRIARCHATES
Cyril could not order all the bishops into union (as Rome supposed and/or hoped) and Seraphim could not hope that all would stay Orthodox.
At any rate, when the Orthodox Patriarch Anthanasios III (Debbas) died in 1723, Seraphim Tanas was duly elected Patriarch according to custom by the clergy and laity of Damascus and consecrated with the name Cyril VI.
All we can say is that the time was not right for a total union of the two churches.

Cyril, St. Antony and St. Pachomius, to mention but a few; and tragic in the vast number of her children who in the various persecutions suffered martyrdom for their adherence to the Christian Faith.
A new era of enlightenment and increased personal and corporate spirituality was ushered in with the enthronement of Cyril VI, the former Abuna Mina al-Mutawahhid ql-Baramusi, in 1959.
The Coptic Church sent Bishop Shenute (the present Pope and Patriarch) to attend the millennial celebrations of the monastic community on Mount Athos; other bishops entered into discussions with representatives of the Byzantine churches and engaged repeatedly in theological discourses with leaders of the Roman Catholic Church.

NPNF2-07. Cyril of Jerusalem, Gregory Nazianzen (all)
Cyril himself was probably born, or at least brought up, in or near Jerusalem, for it was usual to choose a Bishop from among the Clergy over whom he was to preside, a preference being given to such as were best known to the people generally
The present translation of the Catechetical Lectures of S. Cyril of Jerusalem is based on a careful revision of the English translation published in the “Library of the Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church,” with a most interesting Preface by John Henry Newman, dated from Oxford, The Feast of St. Matthew, 1838.
One member only of Cyril’s family is mentioned by name, his sister’s son Gelasius, who was appointed by Cyril to be Bishop of Cæsarea on the death of Acacius, a.d.

Slavorum apostoli - Ioannes Paulus PP. II - Encyclical Letter (1985.06.02)
Cyril and Methodius are as it were the connecting links or spiritual bridge between the Eastern and Western traditions, which both come together in the one great Tradition of the universal Church.
Cyril and Methodius, in their personality and their work, are figures that awaken in all Christians a great "longing for union" and for unity between the two sister Churches of East and West.
But the characteristic of the approach adopted by the Apostles of the Slavs Cyril and Methodius which I especially wish to emphasize is the peaceful way in which they built up the Church, guided as they were by their vision of the Church as one, holy and universal.

 CNEWA - Melkite Catholic Church
In 1848 the government formally recognized the Melkite Catholic Church, and the Patriarchate itself moved to Damascus from Holy Savior Monastery near Sidon, Lebanon, where it had been established by Cyril VI after he fled there.
This was followed by a period of growth, enhanced by the popular perception of the Melkite church as a focus of Arab resistance against the Turks.
In Canada, the diocese of Saint-Sauveur de Montral, under the guidance of Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim (34 Maplewood, Outremont, Quebec H2V 2M1), has eight parishes and missions, and 43,000 faithful.

Reply to Jason Engwer's <Catholic But Not Roman Catholic> Series on the Church Fathers: Sola Scriptura
Thus, there is all the more reason to believe that the Church was necessary to determine the canon of Scripture, as Cyril himself notes.
But in learning the Faith and in professing it, acquire and keep that only, which is now delivered to thee by the Church, and which has been built up strongly out of all the Scriptures.
Even he couldn't know exactly what books were Scripture without the Church.

There were ecclesiastical dignitaries with all the rights and prerogatives of patriarchs in the first three centuries; but the official title does not occur till later.
The title of "Babylon" was not used till Pope Innocent XI conferred it in 1681.

Father Matta from Tammua says that Pope Cyril VI (1959-70) had a dream revealing the visit of the Holy Family to his church in Giza, just west of Cairo, in the vicinity of the pyramids.
People in the church of Zaytun in Cairo believe the Holy Family must have visited that location because the mother of Jesus appeared there in 1968.
For Copts, God continues to speak through dreams, visions, and revelations.

It should be noted that these come after Antioch, although normally Alexandria has precedence over it.
He was succeded by Clement I (Bahus, 1856-1864), Gregory II (Yussef, 1865-1879), Peter IV (Jeraïjiri, 1897-1902), and Cyril VIII (Jeha, the reigning patriarch, who was elected 27 June, 1903, confirmed at once by telegram from Rome, enthroned in the patriarchal church at Damascus, 8 August, 1903).

His Holiness Anba Shenouda III, The Estimate, January 28, 2000
In the tradition of the desert fathers, he would live for weeks at a time alone in a cave in the desert; one such cell is said to have been seven miles from the monastery and one 25 miles away.
Three years later, in 1962, he was named Bishop for Religious Education, with the episcopal name of Shenouda.
As the church underwent modernization and rebirth in the era of Cyril VI, bishops with specialized talents were appointed to such general positions rather than to geographical sees.

In 1808 the British and Foreign Bible Society sent agents to Greece, where they planned a modern Greek translation of the Bible with Adamantios Koraes (1748-1833).
The Patriarch of Constantinople Cyril VI blessed the undertaking, although his successors resisted it for many years.

The History of the Melkite Byzantine Church
Already in the 16th and 17th centuries, efforts toward a return to unity had been made by various Melkite Patriarchs of Antioch, now residing in Damascus where the See had been transferred in the 15th century after the destruction of Antioch by a violent earthquake.
One of his successors, Cyril VI Thanas ( 1724-1759) completed the work of unification, but a Greek monk, Sylvester, had himself nominated Patriarch by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, thereby forcing Cyril VI to flee from Damascus and take refuge in Lebanon.
Jesuit and Capuchin missionaries did everything they could to foster good will and, finally, in 1709, Patriarch Cyril V formally recognized the authority of the Pope.

Popes & Patriarchs of Constantinople, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Antioch, etc.
Although the Church of the Pope is called by one and all the "Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church," and this is contrasted, not just with Protestant churches, but with the Orthodox Churches of the East, Greek, Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Russian, Romanian, Serbian, etc., this has been no more than a very clever usurpation.
After the return of the Popes to Rome, it was some time before the territorial fortunes could be restored.
This would last until 1870, giving the Papal States a run of 1116 years.
