Confessing Movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another part of the background of the movement is that from the 1950s to the 1980s mainline churches in the US lost many of their members, while conservative churches were growing.
The confessing movement points to the shrinkage of the church as evidence of a wrong path taken, and seeks to bring the church back to its original confessions of faith.
The Confessing Movement is a neo-Evangelical movement within several mainline Protestant churches to return those churches to what the members of this movement see as greater theological orthodoxy.

The real strength to the movement, of course, is that it is the people in the pews giving voice to, and standing firm in, their belief that Jesus Christ alone is the way, the truth and the life.
Since its inception, the Confessing Church Movement has been grounded in Presbyterians who simply are standing up and saying who they are and in whom they believe, what their authority is for that belief, and what its application is to life.
Although often maligned by denominational leaders in the past, the continually growing Confessing Church Movement represents the evangelical wing of the denomination that is most committed to faithful stewardship and worship.

As of November 20, the Confessing Church Movement was comprised of 1,284 churches (11.5% of the denomination), representing 427,397 members (17.2% of the denomination).
From the beginning, the tenets of the Confessing Church Movement have drawn opposition as Presbyterians throughout the church struggled over what it means to confess the faith.
The daily average through the first 610 days of the movement is 2.2 churches and 719 members, with the average size of a Confessing Church being 333 members.

The Confessing Church Movement's statement of faith is a pledge of allegiance to fundamentalism.
The Confessing Church Movement's claim that scripture is "the Church's only infallible rule of faith" means the same thing as the fundamentalist notion that the Bible is "inerrant."
But the Confessing Church Movement, Presbyterians for Renewal and the Laymen are an "extreme faction." Their "rule or ruin" approach is the real divider.

The Confessing Church Movement has developed within the Presbyterian Church (USA) in response to a number of disturbing trends in the national denomination.

As the Confessing Church Movement within the Presbyterian Church (USA) continues to grow, some people still are unsure as to how to get their congregation recognized as a Confessing Church.
Sessions have adopted a variety of resolutions, but all cite three core beliefs: that Jesus alone is the world's Lord and Savior, that Scripture is the infallible rule of life and faith, and that God's standards for holy life have not been pre-empted by cultural changes.
The Rev. Dan Reuter, pastor of Prospect Presbyterian Church in Prospect, Pa., said his congregation was in the movement because it appeared that "there is no connection between The Book of Confessions and the actions and decisions of many of the leaders of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Second, the movement is responding to a pervasive loss of awe and reverence in the presence of the Holy in today’s church, which is a concomitant of life in a postmodern culture whose basic faith lies in humanity itself rather than the living God.
Third, the confessing churches are reacting against the mantle of righteousness of the left of center which has claimed the mantle of orthodoxy in the Presbyterian Church for most of the past 40 years.

The confessing church movement is "the first thing the orthodox and the renewal side of the church have had to stand up and say `Yes' to in a decade," said Bob Davis of the Presbyterian Forum, an evangelical group.
At the same time, the confessing church movement has given some congregations a sense of empowerment – a conviction that it's time for congregations that have felt out-of-touch with denominational policies to speak out about what they believe.
There has been criticism of the confessing church movement – particularly from Jack Rogers, moderator of the 213th General Assembly, who has pointed out that the Presbyterian process of writing confessions typically has involved the whole church, not just individual congregations, and a long period of discernment and study and prayer.

I am especially distressed by the absence of charity in their condemnation of those who disagree with their understanding of "orthodoxy." A welcome contrast is found in the Council of Bishops, who have set an exemplary tone for the discussion of theological differences in the church.
"The Confessing Movement" poses a serious threat to the historic character and identity of the United Methodist Church.
Part of an effort that goes back at least to the "Houston Declaration" in 1987 and the "Memphis Declaration" in 1992, it seeks to put narrow limits on the openness of our church to free theological exploration by defining what they regard to be "orthodox" doctrines.

This ecclesiastical aberration would be of little interest to anyone who was not thinking of working in The United Methodist ministry, except that the phrase used - the "Lordship" of Christ - is the catch-phrase of the Confessing Movement, a movement aiming to purge The United Methodist Church of theological liberals.

Presbyterians: Presbyterians Launch 'Confessing Movement' - Christianity Today magazine - ChristianityTodayLibrary.com
A burgeoning "confessing church movement" is calling Presbyterians to affirm that "Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the way of salvation" and that the Bible is "the Church's only infallible rule of faith and life." The document also calls for sexual purity within the confines of marriage between one man and one woman.
The movement began at Summit Presbyterian Church in western Pennsylvania, part of a regional presbytery that last year said liberals and conservatives had reached an "irreconcilable impasse." Organizers say in the first few weeks since the document's release, as many as 1,000 churches have expressed interest or support.
Conservatives within the Presbyterian Church (USA), upset with their denomination's liberal drift on human sexuality and biblical authority, are circulating a three-point pledge to member churches, and some conservatives are threatening to withhold money if the national church leadership does not also sign on.
