 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Communion of Saints
The communion of saints is the spiritual solidarity which binds together the faithful on earth, the souls in purgatory, and the saints in heaven in the organic unity of the same mystical body under Christ its head, and in a constant interchange of supernatural offices.
XXV, decrees on purgatory; on the invocation, veneration, and relics of saints and of sacred images; on indulgences), is, nevertheless, dogma commonly taught and accepted in the Church.
Her praises were sung by the Saxon poets; hymns in her honour were chanted in the public service; churches and altars were placed under her patronage; miraculous cures were ascribed to her; and four annual feasts were observed commemorating the principal events of her mortal life: her nativity, the Annunciation, her purification, and assumption.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Beatification and Canonization
In the earlier ages, therefore, this worship of the saints was entirely local and passed from one church to another with the permission of their bishops.
The worship of latria (latreia), or strict adoration, is given to God alone; the worship of dulia (douleia), or honour and humble reverence, is paid the saints; the worship of hyperdulia (hyperdouleia), a higher form of dulia, belongs, on account of her greater excellence, to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It follows naturally that for the public veneration of the saints the ecclesiastical authority of the pastors and rulers of the Church was constantly required.

Which communion, as God offereth opportunity, is to be extended unto all those who, in every place, call upon the name of the Lord Jesus.
Section III.–This communion which the saints have with Christ, doth not make them in any wise partakers of the substance of the Godhead, or to be equal with Christ in any respect: either of which to affirm, is impious and blasphemous.
Section II.–Saints by profession are bound to maintain an holy fellowship and communion in the worship of God, and in performing such other spiritual services as tend to their mutual edification; as also in relieving each other in outward things, according to their several abilities and necessities.

 Communion of Saints
The communion of saints is the completed unity of those that are of the household of faith and love.
There is no difference in the eyes of God between the church militant (saints here on earth) and the church triumphant (those gone on to be with the Lord in heaven.) All who have partaken of eternal live are of the same spirit, have defeated death and cannot spiritually die.
The communion we share is with "The saints of all ages" and of all those alive today, and so the many are one in Christ; it is not a communication between living and resurrected saints.

FT March 2003: The Communion of Saints
Although our communion with God is impeded by sin, which repeatedly alienates us from Him, we are able to be reconciled through Jesus Christ who prayed to the Father, “For their sake I sanctify myself, that they may be sanctified in truth” (John 17:19).
While all Christians are properly called saints, the word “saint” soon became a title of honor referring to exemplary lives among the faithful, and most notably the lives of martyrs.
Living as we do in communion with those who have gone before us, we strive to realize in the pilgrim Church on earth a life together that more fully anticipates the communion of the Church in glory.

 Theology Today - Vol 44, No.1 - April 1987 - ARTICLE - May We Invoke The Saints?
The practice of invoking the prayers of the saints, not commanded by Scripture, is a practice which developed in the course of the church's history as an expression of the truth that in Christ all believers are of significance for each other, even across the chasm of death.
When invocation of the saints occurs during the eucharistic liturgy, it is a concrete expression of the people of God as a community comprising members in heaven and on earth, all joined together in Jesus Christ.
It is typical, for example, that Vatican II affirmed both the sole mediatorship of Jesus Christ and the belief that communion with the saints in heaven in no way weakens but rather enriches the church's worship of the triune God, without thoroughly explaining the intelligibility of these affirmations vis-á-vis each other.

While the holy day is rooted in a celebration of saints, the honoring of family comes from the Catholic belief in the communion of saints, which holds that the church's members on earth are united to its members in Heaven.
Pope Gregory IV established the Feast of All Saints for the entire church in 835, said the Rev. Paul de Ladurantaye, secretary for religious education and the sacred liturgy for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.
All Saints' Day honors martyrs and others who have been canonized by the church, but it also celebrates those who have devoted their lives to God, de Ladurantaye said.

Finally, the saints already glorified in Heaven comprise the third portion of the Church, namely the Church Triumphant.
I know of no surer path to sanctity than their holy examples as they each lived the life of Christ in the life of a bricklayer, of a housewife, a child, a hermit, a priest, a pope, a mystic, a bridge-builder or whatever vocation God gave to each one, and to each of us.
As we can see from this early Scriptural martyrology, the holy example of the Saints is important indeed as an encouragement for all of us to follow their example.

The Communion of Saints Catechism of the Catholic Church
