Common Worship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Common Worship is a series of books of services and prayers, known as a liturgy, published by the Church of England.
It is one of only two prayer books currently (as of 2004) authorised for use by the Church of England.
The other official service book for the Church of England denomination in England is the 1662 Book of Common Prayer (BCP).

Guidelines for Common Worship for Lutherans and Anglicans in Canada
Worship together may also take place in situations of pastoral care, when members of the two churches are to be married, or at the funeral of a member of one congregation whose spouse belongs to another.
When a congregation of one tradition invites a congregation of the other tradition to worship, normally the liturgy of the host church shall be used.
Thus, while there is general approval for the ELCIC standard worship books, in Anglican practice the diocesan bishop reserves the right of approval in their diocese.

 Common Prayer
These are the prayers we say together or "in common" when we worship as a community.
The Book of Common Prayer is a collection of ancient and modern prayers and worship occasions for times when the community gathers and for individual use as well.
The Book of Common Prayer can be complicated even for life-long Episcopalians and can seem even more bewildering for visitors and new comers.

The purpose and function of common worship
The worshiper is called to be part of the sacred event and to be transformed by it.
Of course, worship need not be exclusively any one of these, and rarely is. There are times when we want worship to be educational.
It is directed upward to God, inward to the individual, and outward into the worshipping community and the world at large.

 Common Worship: Daily Prayer
Using the Common Worship psalter and general style, Food in Due Season is the perfect companion to the Church of England's breviary, Common Worship: Daily Prayer, and will be welcomed by individuals, families, churches and religious communities.
Prior to the Book of Common Prayer, the Breviary contained the Divine Office and included beautiful liturgies for midday and evening meals for several seasons of the Christian year.
This Canon was, naturally, widely disregarded throughout the Church as the forms of service in the Book of Common Prayer, the only authorised service book for more than 400 years, increasingly failed to meet the needs of parishes of all persuasions.

Towards Koinonia in Worship - Ditchingham, August 1994
The centrality of worship in the life of the Church was also affirmed in the Constitution on the Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, of the Second Vatican Council which spoke of the eucharist as the source and summit of the life of the Church.
And often it is through worship that theological agreements are most effectively brought into the life of the churches, as convergence in doctrine and practice is expressed and experienced within the context of the community gathered in prayer and in praise of God.
The basic liturgical components of baptism that emerge from tradition are: proclamation of the Scripture; invocation of the Holy Spirit; renunciation of evil; profession of faith in the Holy Trinity; and the use of water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Layer de la Haye / Breton / Marney Churches - Common Worship
Until the introduction of Common Worship services in 2001 there were different patterns of worship in each of the churches for historical and practical reasons.
Layer Breton felt the move to Common Worship Holy Communion had been such a major change for them that time was needed for the congregation to adjust to that before trying a Common Worship form of Morning Prayer.
Common Worship provides a wealth of new material and there are arguments for having all of it available to everyone.

Common Ground Conference - Winds of Praise
We assembled 10 instrumentalists and singers from 6 churches and together, followed the Holy Spirit as He led worship. The common denominator with all these leaders was a spirit of humility and an aspiration to be obedient to God’s desire. It came as no surprise that many were touched and healed.
A gathering of people desiring to seek God through corporate prayer and worship was held along the Central Oregon Coast in Newport and Siletz Oct 3, 4, and 5, 2003.
Common Ground : Co-sponsored by Winds of Praise, Sacred Ground Outreach, and Pacificministries, A Gathering of Intercessors and "Releasing the Prophetic" Conference will begin Friday at 7pm October 3, 2003 at the Newport Foursquare Church, 215 NW 15th St in Newport Oregon.

Common Worship will sit alongside The Book of Common Prayer, which is authorized permanently and is completely untouched by the revision process.
These are being gathered together and published as Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England.
You can find out more about the content and structure of the new services in the Common Worship Section of the Church of England's web site.

Common Worship services are published by Church House Publishing (website www.chpublishing.co.uk) in a wide variety of editions.

The Psalter in Common Worship has no pointing, which is perhaps surprising as it encourages the use of a psalm in the Holy Communion service and makes extensive use of canticles and psalms in such services as Morning and Evening Prayer on Sunday.

Ely Diocese Ely Ensign - April 2000 Common Worship
This means that the decision-making about local forms of worship is shared between the local level (for instance, a vicar working with the church council) and the wider church (for instance, in limiting the options for some parts of the services).
Over the next few months leading up to the publication of ‘Common Worship’; we shall take a look at some of the services, at some of the changes you may notice, and (especially for clergy and for PCC members) what you will need to do between now and the end of the year.
After nearly twenty years, the ASB has become an established part of the worship of the Church of England, alongside the Book of Common Prayer.

 Common Worship
I often worship with fringe groups on the edge of the churches whose spiritual search is very real.
Common Worship’ is a backward-looking collection which testifies to an inward-looking church setting up barriers against the world and even against ecumenical co-operation.
When the TV commentator spoke of the 15 years of work on ‘Common Worship’ and said that it would be a very long time before the Church of England changed its liturgy again, my heart sank.

The Prayer Book Society: News: COMMON WORSHIP & the QUEEN
However, if we choose to use Common Worship (2000-2004), the multi-volume alternative to the one small volume which is The Book of Common Prayer, then we find that we are under no requirement or rubric to pray for the Queen either in Morning and Evening Prayer or in Holy Communion.
And in the whole of the multi-volume Common Worship there are no prayers provided at all for the Nobility.
Regrettably the provisions of Common Worship can be interpreted as a sign of the Church calling for dis-establishment through the means of teaching people NOT to pray for the Queen, the royal family and the nobility!

Trends in Common Worship - David Phillips
In producing Common Worship the voices calling for the removal of words such as ‘Lord’, ‘Almighty’ and ‘King’, on the grounds of them expressing a one-sided view of God, appear to have been as faint as those calling for inclusive language when the ASB was produced.(33)
Whether this is achieved within or without the structures the goals are clear; the liturgy must be doctrinally reformed and also linguistically eloquent, for it is liturgy to be used in the worship of the God of heaven.
In Common Worship, at the preparation of the table (54) and in draft Eucharistic Prayer E this has moved on to ‘we set before you’ and in Eucharistic Prayer B to ‘these gifts’(55).

The Book of Common Prayer was written in 1662 and is a permanent feature of the Church of England's worship.
Common Worship was authorised for use in 2002, replacing the 1980 Alternative Service Book.

Material History of American Religion Project--Weakness of Common Worship
Obviously in such a situation the center of attention should be the "whole estate of Christ's church," thanksgiving for its unity, contrition for its divisions, and a meaningful relation of the church, as a community of grace to the whole range of problems in the communities of the world.
There are non-liturgical churches who have books of common worship; but frequently they are not used.
These protests had their validity in their day; for it is manifest again and again in the life of the church, that the various disciplines of the church which are properly means of grace may also become corrupters of grace.

The Prayer Book Society: News: Liturgy ECUSA Style
In the Church of England, “Common Worship” since 2000 refers to a Directory of volumes (CD’s) that is slowly increasing and offering choices for every kind of service for use in the parishes of the Church.
With “Common Lectionary” it may be said that here is a List of Sunday Readings which are used in common by several Churches, but “Common Worship” is hardly a Directory of services which are used in common by parishes in one province.
This process was assisted ecumenically by the use of the term “Common Lectionary” (a lectionary that several churches have in common).

 Common Worship Church of England
This part of the Church of England web site is dedicated to Common Worship, the services and prayers which are available for use in the Church of England alongside the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
It also includes services from The Book of Common Prayer in the forms in which they are customarily used today, as well as a service of Night Prayer using the texts from The 1928 Prayer Book.
A key concept is that of the Christian life as a journey - one in which those as yet uncommitted to the faith are also invited to join.

Stepping Stones for Worship & Preaching
The purpose of this international e-mail forum is: (1) to provide an opportunity for worship leaders from different cultures and Christian traditions to exchange liturgies, poems, prayers, hymns/songs, etc., based on the Revised Common Lectionary; and (2) to share difficulties and delights that arise from Lectionary-related worship in the localised setting.
The purpose of this international e-mail forum is: (1) to provide an opportunity for preachers and worship leaders from many different social locations and Christian traditions to study and discuss the weekly Revised Common Lectionary texts; and (2) to discuss and exchange ideas and suggestions for planning weekly worship based on these texts.

 PBSC: Crisis in Common Prayer
When the Episcopal Church of the USA decided in the 1970's to keep the term "Common Prayer" for it's new Prayer Book, it kept both a revered and ancient expression and injected into that expression a new meaning.
Bishops, who guard the Faith, have a special duty to make sure that the classic Common Prayer does not get broken up and made part of a modern form of Anglicanism, which is neither distinctive nor biblical.
The classic Common Prayer is not merely a set of Rites.

 Common Worship
Begin by tracing the history of worship in St Agatha’s, a typical Church of England parish church, from Celtic times to the present day.
It engages with the Church of England’s new Common Worship services, but goes much deeper than that, exploring the origin and meaning of Christian Worship as it has developed through nearly 2000 years.
The first half of the book looks at the theology and history of worship and liturgy, particularly in the Church of England and the Anglican Communion, before moving on to look at the Common Worship services themselves, including the background, underlying thinking and practical implications.

Containing selections from the Common Worship eucharistic texts, they focus on what are likely to be the preferred options in most Anglo-Catholic parishes from Order One and Order One (Traditional).

Nor will the clergy in such parishes need to wade through all eight eucharistic prayers and create their own orders of service - the work has been done for them by the Church Union.

"A person would participate actively in the worship of non-Catholics if, besides being physically present in the place where such worship was being conducted, he placed some positive act of worship in common with the non-Catholic worshipers.
"I am glad to know that, where possible, the attempt is being made to organize also common prayers with the other brother Christians, in harmony of sentiments, in order that, in obedience to the Lord's will, we may grow in faith, towards full unity, for the building up of the body of Christ.
Such cooperation would be formal if it were done with the intention of really taking part in the worship; it would be merely material if done without that intention but for some other reason, for example, mere civility or friendship.
