 COMMON ERA
Common Era's writers range from a feminist Mormon struggling with her faith; Vaclav Havel (President of the Czech Republic) and his views on the spiritual aspects of human rights and democracy; Mitchell Kapor, creator of the computer program "Lotus 1-2-3" and exponent of the information highway as a vehicle for enhancing spiritual growth.
Common Era brings together some of the most creative minds of our time: Bill Moyers, Allen Ginsberg, Vaclav Havel, Theodore Roszak, Rosemary Radford Ruether, Matthew Fox, Mitchell Kapor, among others reflect on interfaith dialogue, sexuality and sprituality, ecology and the soul, post-modernism and politics, women's spirituality and mysticism.
Steven Scholl is founding publisher of White Cloud Press, editor of The Peace Bible: Words from the Great Traditions (foreword by Hans Kung), and a contributor to The Encyclopedia of Religion.

Era Superiority?: Secularists sneer at B.C. & A.D.
Whereas "Before Common Era" is what they call the period before Christ, the "Common Era" encompasses both the period between Christ's birth until the birth of the new liberal paradigm, and the period that follows that one.
The superficial reason for this is that their favored terms, not being derived from religion, are more scientifically valid.
Not really, but that doesn't mean they haven't still created a new era of their own.

 BBC - h2g2 - The 'Common Era' - a secular term for year definition - A2972405
Supporters of the Common Era alternative say that it is unfair to force a religious system on those who do not share its values.
While religious tolerance, ease of communication between cultures and the availability of information to all are things to be strived for, the flaws in the Common Era system and the traditional and historical importance of using the birth of Christ to define dates also deserve consideration.
If one looks into the presence of religion in other words that signify time, Common Era reform appears to be grossly insufficient.

Jews as promoted by Catholicism - Stormfront White Nationalist Community
The Catholic Church demands that the common Catholic population, men, women and children, must be kept in constant and present danger of Jewish influence, and at the same time the Jews must be housed, protected and given the banking monopoly.
300 Common Era Eusebius, Bishop of Caesaria, claimed that Jews in every community crucified a Christian at their Purim festival as a rejection of Jesus.
306 Common Era The church Synod of Elvira (Spain) banned all community contacts between Christians and the "evil" Hebrews and stated that Christians could not marry Jews.

The demise of communism, some say, now allows a spirit of cooperation among nations which will bring on the benefits of world-wide prosperity and a universal increase in the standard of living.

What is this C.E./ B.C.E. Business?
But not even the term "Christian Era" is adequate for it does not acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
The Common Era business is a not-so-sneaky way to tell time without acknowledging Jesus Christ at all.
"Christian Era" sounds like a bunch of people got together to form "Christianity" when in reality Jesus Christ came as the fulfilment of the ancient Jewish prophesies.

The use of CE and BCE  to identify dates
Most theologians and religious historians believe that the approximate birth date of Yeshua of Nazareth (Jesus) was in the fall, sometime between 7 and 4 BCE, although we have seen estimates as late as 4 CE and as early as the second century BCE.
There are many religious calendars in existence, but each of these are normally in use in only a small geographic area of the world -- typically by followers of a single religion.
We probably get more critical E-mails about the use of CE and BCE than about any other single topic, other than homosexuality, abortion in the Bible, and whether Roman Catholics, Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses are actually Christians.

 The Goddess Lunar Calendar
In nine of the twelve Common Era years 1995 through 2006 new year's day occurs on the same day in both the Goddess Calendar and in the Chinese Calendar, and in the other three years the Chinese New Year occurs on the day following the Goddess New Year.
Although astronomers cannot actually predict very far ahead (see Comment On Future Accuracy), we can at least say that, on average, the years of the Goddess Calendar can be expected to accord with the seasons for several millennia yet.
As shown above, the Goddess Calendar will stay in accord with the lunar phases (on average) over a period of thousands of years.

 BC,AD versus BCE,CE - World History & Geography
It occurs to me that any non-Christian who gives this matter some thought might reasonably conclude that a conscious decision to use CE is more offensive than retaining a traditional designation based on simple etymology.
Our calendar is based on the birth of Christ; all years before Christ's birth have traditionally been designated B.C. (before Christ) and those after his birth as A.D., an abbreviation for the Latin term anno Domini which means "in the year of the Lord."
The change was made to mask the Christian basis for the dating system and presumably make it more palatable to non-Christians.

I have seen some religion books from my childs Catholic School that now have B.C.E and C.E. instead of B.C and A.D. I questioned one of the sisters about it and she said that the Church is now using Before Common Era and Common Era so as not to offend people that are not Christian.
I am not aware of any Church policy changing the designation of BC/AD to BCE/CE.
Another teacher said that it actually means Before Christian Era.

Instead of "before Christ," the new style renders those times as "before the common era."
The trend is common in academic texts, especially in anthropology, where it is the accepted style.
