Church Fathers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Church Fathers or Fathers of the Church are the early and influential theologians and writers in the Christian Church, particularly those of the first five centuries of Christian history.
In the Roman Catholic Church, St. John of Damascus, who lived in the 8th century, is generally considered to be the last of the Church Fathers and at the same time the first seed of the next period of church writers, scholasticism.
The Eastern Orthodox Church does not consider the age of Church Fathers to be over at all and it includes later influential writers in the term.

Lecture 16: The Church Fathers: St. Jerome and St. Augustine
To many of the early Church Fathers, classical philosophy was erroneous for the simple reason that it did not emanate from divine revelation.
It is clear that the Church Fathers became Christian intellectuals and theologians.
The most important of all Church Fathers was Augustine of Hippo, better known as ST.

Unanimous Consent of the Church Fathers
When the Fathers of the Church are morally unanimous in their teaching that a certain doctrine is a part of revelation, or is received by the universal Church, or that the opposite of a doctrine is heretical, then their united testimony is a certain criterion of divine revelation.
The Church sees the Fathers as the successors of the apostles, the closest source to the apostolic teaching and tradition, and therefore authoritative.
The Church does not claim that all her "authority rests" on the consent of the Fathers.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Fathers of the Church
But he is also regarded by the early Fathers, such as Hegesippus, Irenaeus, and Tertullian as the recipient of the tradition of his predecessors in the see, and consequently as the witness and representative of the faith of his Church before Catholicity and the world.
The appeal is thus to Churches and their bishops, none but bishops being the authoritative exponents of the doctrine of their Churches.
Hence the expression "the Fathers" comes naturally to be applied to the holy bishops of a preceding age, whether of the last generation or further back, since they are the parents at whose knee the Church of today was taught her belief.

He is one of the APOSTOLIC FATHERS of the church.
The epistle was written because of internal discord and division in the Corinthian church.
It is from Alexandria at the end of the second century that the Epistle to the Hebrews was first explained as having come from Paul to churches who were not automatically aware of the background of the writing.

 Early Church Fathers
There are numerous takes on Church history, many of which focus on when the Catholic Church went "wrong." These are usually amended with a theory as to what happened to the "true" Christian church during the time period between when the Catholic Church went "wrong" and when the "true" church came back into visible existence.
It should be underscored that the writings of the early church fathers and authors do not supercede Scripture.
See that ye all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as ye would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God.

Aquilina made the Fathers of the Church come alive for me.  Origins of Christian Anti-Semitism
The war of the Christian Church against the Jews began with the Church Fathers' relentless attacks on those Jews who stubbornly refused to accept Jesus as Messiah.
It is the intent of this paper to focus on the person of Jesus and his teaching, the theology and teaching of the Apostle Paul, culminating with the writings and theology of the Church Fathers through the 4th and 5th centuries and how each has or has not contributed to the roots of Christian anti-Semitism.
The Church promoted itself as the new Israel, and the other Israel had to be discredited.

The study of the Church Fathers is central to an understanding of and appreciation for the history and content of Orthodox Christianity.
It is in these holy men and women that the Church has found her voice throughout the centuries, in these lives transformed and illumined that she has found her most poignant mouthpeaces.
Yet the great quality of the writings of the Church Fathers is their transcendence of the human moment: their ability to speak to the very heart of man even centuries, perhaps millennia, after they were first written.

IVP Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers
Our first encounter with the writings of the church fathers may seem like visiting a far country where the language, assumptions, concerns and conclusions are completely unfamiliar to us.
In Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers Christopher Hall helps us through this cultural confusion, introducing us to the early church, its unique world, and the sights and sounds of Scripture that are highlighted for them.
They see a deeper worship and devotion in the prayers and hymns of the early church.

Segen--The Works of the Early Church Fathers
Volumes 1-9 contain the works of the Ante-Nicene Fathers, dating from the first generation after the original disciples to about 325 A.D. These disciples are confessedly inferior to their masters; they speak with the voices of infirm and fallible men, and not like the New-Testament writers, with the fiery tongues of the Holy Ghost.
Written before the Canon was established, when Scripture was scarce and difficult to come by, the works of the Anti-Nicene Fathers offered itself as a means to defend the Christian faith, to record the martyrdom of the early Christian church body, and to stand as monuments to the power of the Gospel.
he Early Church Fathers steered the young church through the turbulent cultural and mythological currents of the pagan world.

It is evident from the letters of Ignatius that he believed the church to be living in the last times and that the coming of the Lord was at hand.
In addition to this, we have the Martyrdom of Polycarp, a letter from the church at Smyrna to the Phrygian church of Philomelium.

 The Church Fathers
Born of a Christian family in 184/5, his father Leonidas died in the persecution in the tenth year of Severus (202; Eusebius tells us that Origen wanted to be martyred at the same time but was prevented by his mother, who hid all his clothing to keep him from going out).
A member of the Jacobite Syriac church, he was bishop first of Mabbûg and then Amida.
The first problem in dealing with the Fathers is order: Except for a few commentaries, the Fathers don't quote the New Testament chapter by chapter and verse by verse.
