Christmas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christmas (literally, the Mass of Christ) is a traditional holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus with both religious and secular aspects, commonly observed on 25 December.
Christmas is now celebrated on December 25 in Catholic and Catholic-derived churches (Roman and Protestant), and thus in most of the Western world.
Christmas has acquired many secular aspects, which are sometimes celebrated as often—or more—than the birth of Jesus.

Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church.
Prudentius, in the fourth century, is the first (and in that century alone) to hymn the Nativity, for the "Vox clara" (hymn for Lauds in Advent) and "Christe Redemptor" (Vespers and Matins of Christmas) cannot be assigned to Ambrose.
In Cyprus, at the end of the fourth century, Epiphanius asserts against the Alogi (Hær., li, 16, 24 in P. G., XLI, 919, 931) that Christ was born on 6 January and baptized on 8 November.
