Christian left - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is not specifically Christian (being subscribed to by Buddhists, Hindus, and members of other religions), but uses arguments broadly similar to those used by Christian leftists.
In the United States, members of the Christian Left come from a spectrum of denominations: Peace churches, elements of the Protestant mainline churches, and Roman Catholicism.
Many such people assert that their left-wing views derive directly from their Christian faith, and some cite Jesus as "the first socialist".

TAP: Vol 15, Iss. 4. Reaching to the Choir. Ayelish McGarvey.
A born-again Christian and an evangelical himself, Carter is arguably one of the most religious presidents in recent history; he still teaches a Sunday school class at his Baptist church in Plains, Georgia.
As a Christian, Johnson believes that people must work to protect God's creation; his faith requires that he care for his neighbor and leave this world in better shape than when he entered it.
Evangelical Christianity is a mighty force in the personal lives of nearly 25 percent of Americans today.

Townhall.com :: Columns :: Left never tires of Christian bashing by David Limbaugh
If Christians are to honor Christ's Great Commission of spreading the Gospel to all nations, they must engage in the political arena and governance if for no other reason than that the Gospel cannot flourish as well in the absence of political and religious liberty.
But a Christian inhibits his Christian walk if he places his religion on just one "shelf" of his life.
What the secular Left wants to do is marginalize Christian conservatives by suggesting they are hell-bent on reserving religious liberty (and presumably other types of freedom) only for themselves.

Freethought Weekly: To the Christian Left
Someone who professes to be a christian but doesn't appear to care at all about your interpretation of what the bible teaches, or someone who simply doesn't believe in jesus but otherwise has the same views that you have.
Bush is still christian, he just has a different interpretation of what the bible says.
And again for the atheists, I think that we can agree that religion is what the believers make it.

A Voice from the Christian Left
As a Christian teaching at a Christian college, wife of a Christian pastor, I am appalled at the irresponsibility, ignorance, and self-righteous posture of those on the “Christian Right” who support these atrocities.
The very public nature of Bush’s religiosity ought to be at least a yellow flag for any believer who remembers Jesus’ admonishment to the Pharisees: "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 6:1).
Alas, a good number among those cheering the Republican takeover are church-going people who sincerely believe that God has sent us a leader whose purposes are God’s own.

Pastor, I am Gay, meantime, became a kind of cult book among the gay Christian community, which had been told by nearly every church that they were sinners for who they are and how they live their lives.
Only one Protestant Christian church in the United States - the United Church of Christ - openly ordains gay clergy, while the official doctrines of the mainline Protestant churches (Methodists, Lutherans, Episcopalians and Presbyterians) don't allow it.

An article of relevantmagainze.com the other day really bothered me. It was about a U2 concert, and a quote that Bono said regarding Christianity, Judaism and Islam being the three Abrahmic faiths.

While I agree that Christian Zionists and other Fascists for Jesus deserve a real thumping, there are groups, like CMEP, and pastors like Jim Wallis of Sojourners, who are making (at least) a dent in the insanity, and doing so in a manner that jives with what they believe.
The great Christian believer (and questioner), Hermann Hesse, said in his book, “Demian”, that “…we create gods, and they bless us.&; We make up friends to hold our hand in the terrifying icy impersonal universe of “black velvet futility” as Kurt Vonnegut put it in “Sirens of Titan”.
In this way, either one can speak of faith as a mode of experience or most likely one is not a religious leftist of any sort, whether Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist.

Todd Huffman: The Christian Left Is Right About Jesus
Raised Christian but now identifying myself as Unitarian, I have always been struck by the smallness of Jesus - no, not small in any physical or inferior sense, but small in an unassuming sense; small enough to fit inside each one of us and yet be noticed by so few of us.
While acknowledging and celebrating the presence of millions of Americans practicing religions other than Christianity, or practicing no religion at all, the simple fact remains that most Americans define themselves as Christian.

The legacy of Christian activism in the political arena is rich with examples of social justice ranging from the Great Awakening to the Social Gospel movement.
Thus, the Socialist Party did well in areas where such Pentecostal groups as the Church of Christ enjoyed popular support, representing a primitive Christianity of the oppressed with its roots in the Great Awakening.
This right-wing scenario, however, fails to accurately reflect the more complicated role played by religion in American politics.

The Christian Left's Responsibility by Neil Elliott
The problem isn't that the Left has failed to “get religion,” it's that too many of our churches have stood by silently as neoconservatives ravaged the social and civil infrastructure built to protect the vulnerable.
The reigning propaganda system defines for all of us what “religion” is. The hard-right spin of “Christian news” programs, the soothing, insipid grins of electronic pastors, the parade of fabulously successful celebrities and millionaires whose cheery faith carried them through “the hard times” – these are standard fare.
We must own – and if necessary, relearn – our church's teachings about the dangers of capitalism, the priority of human labor over profit, the preferential option for the poor, and the incompatibility of warfare with the teaching of Jesus Christ.

 Christian Anarchy (Eller)
I propose, therefore, that the basic distinction between worldly politics and Christian politics lies in two assumptions that are fundamental to the worldly practice but absolutely rejected by the gospel.
Worldly politics is built upon pretentious claims of moral superiority--of which the Christian gospel recognizes nary a one.
Likewise, both with Jesus' "being not of the world" and Paul's "not being conformed to the world," we read them as counsels to separate ourselves only from the world's bad powers and certainly not from its good ones.
