Encyclopedia: Criticisms of Pentecostal and Charismatic belief
Charismatic and Pentecostal manifestations such as Speaking in Tongues, being Slain in the Spirit, the laughing and crying caused by the Toronto blessing and the placebo effect of Faith healing can all be explained by the prevalence of Religious ecstasy in these gatherings.
Charismatic and Pentecostal leaders will lay often claim to the bible as their final authority in all matters of faith and life.
Charismatic churches that have embraced Transformationalism are likely to have a worship style that reflects this theological stance.

 Charismatics, The
This occurrence at Duquesne University in 1967 is thought to be the beginning of the Catholic Charismatic Movement and the answer to the prayer of Pope John XXIII who ushered in the Second Vatican Council, in 1964, with the hope that the Holy Spirit would create a "New Pentecost" and a transformation in the Church.
She described the "supernatural benefit from the manifestation of this charism of praise as one that lifts the soul into the joy of God and is not forgotten but `impressed upon the imagination.'" Sometimes such jubilation would bring on a spiritual inebriation which lasted the entire day.
The charismatic movement had begun, others were coming forth revealing their experiences including those within the Catholic Church.

 ABOUT CHARISMATICS
Charismatics are often so aware of themselves as a movement that they gather, network, and otherwise live their churchly life as if they were a body unto themselves and not a part of the church bodies and congregations they are in.
The Geneva Conference of Charismatics in 1980 envisioned a renewed and unified church, as charismatics saw it, marks which were present in the early church, which they believed were present in their movement
Charismatics must come out more actively into the world, and make their Christian faith clear to the world.

 Holier Than Thou - Charismatics
Charismatics believe in spiritual healing, miracles, casting out of demons, prophecy, speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, and that signs and wonders should accompany the preaching of the gospel.
Some have also attributed it to the zeal with which many charismatic churches worship and proclaim the gospel, but it is foremost a movement within the last century involving a revival of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Unlike the Pentecostal movement, which was primarily Protestant, the Charismatic movement (or its second wave) spread among various denominations, including the Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic churches.

The Charismatic Movement: A Biblical Critique
Charismatics teach that believing in Jesus Christ is not enough for the fulfilled Christian life.
If you are presently attending a Charismatic church, you are exhorted to leave and attend a church that focuses on the truth as revealed in Scripture.
Since the teachings and practices of the Charismatic movement are different than what orthodox Christians have taught for 19 centuries, we believe it is wise to examine these teachings under the light of Scripture.

 CHARISMATICS÷
A paramount objective of Charismatics appears to be the unity of churches and denominations.
Continually the Catholic Charismatics are urged to stay in their church.

Parallel Conversions: Charismatics and Recovered Alcoholics
The purpose of the charismatics is directed to the praise and glory of God.
While many Catholic charismatics believe that to accept Jesus as their personal savior is a guarantee of eternal salvation, they also know that they can become remiss or drop out of the fellowship completely.
The spiritual conversion experienced by both of these groups is intended to carry the individual along in a "new" way of life, and it does for those who stay with it.

 Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Bangalore
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal has been given the task of making the Church aware of the fact that it is a Spirit Community, and the Church has to be the Church of the Spirit of Jesus Christ only then it will be effective as the Light of the Nations.
As the Catholic Charismatic Renewal has entered with the Spirit, and to a Spirit conscious people at a time when the Church in India wants seriously to incarnate and integrate herself in the culture and the religious heritage of the country by an all around and systematic promotion of inculturation especially in spirituality and prayer.
It was way back in 1974 -75 when the Charismatic Renewal in the country of India was very young and growing and the Holy Spirit was moving and renewing people every day, that a group of 30 leaders in Bombay were invited to attend a day of recollection at Seva Niketan Byculla, Bombay (Mumbai).

In order to help Pastors and the Charismatic Movement to work together in building up the Church of Christ, the Pontifical Council for the Laity is preparing a document which will serve as an important point of reference for the life and apostolate of such communities, and for the discernment of their spiritual gifts.
You represent communities of the Charismatic Movement from around the world, which, in their variety, bear witness to the spiritual gifts which the Holy Spirit is bestowing on the Church even in our own day (cf.

The Truth Over Against the False Teaching of the Charismatics
The power of the Charismatics, however, is not a power that causes them to grow in their knowledge of God, so that they willingly serve Him.
They call their gospel the full gospel, and accuse us of not preaching and teaching the full counsel of God, because we deny that God is still causing His people to speak in tongues in the same way that He did back in the days of the apostles.
There are many who deny the fundamental truths of the Reformed faith, who nevertheless claim that a mighty work of the Spirit is going on in their midst.

Most conservative Charismatic churches still believe in being "slain in the spirit," speaking in tongues, extra-biblical revelation, etc. Or in other words, they do not believe that Scripture alone is sufficient.
Recognizing the importance of the charismatic movement and the need for a biblical evaluation of it, MacArthur analyzes the doctrinal differences between charismatics and non-charismatics in the light of Scripture.
In Charismatic Chaos, John F. MacArthur calls for biblical evaluation and analyzes the doctrinal differences between charismatics and non-charismatics in the light of Scripture.

 Catholic Charismatics
This seems to apply to the charismatic movement as well where all too easily every vision and locution is dubbed to come from the Holy Spirit whereas they can just as easily be coming from the mind of the person or perhaps even the devil.
But if the experiences are not authentically charismatic, then, again, we stand in the presence of a growing multitude of persons who believe themselves charismatically led by the Holy Spirit.
Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians that speaking tongues in the church is to edify the Church as a whole, and translators should always be present.

 About Third Wave
The Charismatics who started their own churches, often started non-denominational churches because they did not want to be identified with some of the hard-line Pentecostal beliefs, and/or because they had bad experience in previous denominations they were no longer welcome in and so wanted to be cross-denominational.
Don't be confused with the term, "Charismatic renewal" -- "Renewal' at that time (the 1970's) simply was the term used then to mean that the Holy Spirit was moving across denominations to 'renew' Christians with this baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit, as it was popularly called by the Pentecostals.
Among Protestant Charismatics, the primary doctrinal views of mainline churches are normally maintained.

What is a Charismatic Prayer Meeting?
As regards the Third Person of the Trinity, in Baptism we become temples of the Holy Spirit; in Eucharist we share in the Body and Blood of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit; in Confirmation we are empowered with the gifts and charisms of the Spirit to be witnesses for Jesus Christ.
A "Charismatic Prayer Meeting" is a weekly gathering of Christians to give praise, thanks, honor, and love to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
Beside the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit--Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Piety, Fortitude, and Fear of the Lord, Charismatics strive for the spiritual gifts of tongues and prophesy so that the church may be built up.

The slaying Jesus of the charismatic movement is not the Jesus of the Bible.
The Happy Hunters, with their weird and unscriptural teachings on the Holy Spirit and healing, are accepted by most Charismatic leaders because they are following the same unscriptural spirit.

Charismatics and Change in South Africa
If one includes traditional pentecostals and the charismatic black independent churches, the total portion of South Africans involved in some form of the charismatic movement could well be as large as 35 per cent.
Theologians from mainline churches protest against what they see as undue praise for charismatics, and claim that their own churches have made similar attempts at integration for years.
Their study sampled a mere 80 people, only 30 of whom were members of the new charismatic churches.

Some Methodists, awakened from their spiritual slumber by the Charismatic movement, got so fired up about God and the spiritual gifts that they became positively obnoxious.
For the uninitiated, Charismatics are those who are known for praying for instant healings, raising hands during worship services and speaking in tongues.
The problem with this charge is that, while it is true for Pentecostals in Pentecostal denominations, in general it is not true for Charismatics in the United Methodist Church.

Charismatics Have Highest Levels of 'Biblical Accuracy' [Free Republic]
Having said that, I have also seen charismatics led astray by false teachers...name it and claim it prosperity charlatans have infested certain charismatic churches...(although their influence seems to have waned, thank God).
The types of churches that have the highest percentages of born again believers, after the Assemblies of God, were other Pentecostal churches (80%), non-denominational Protestant churches (76%), and Baptist churches (67%).
There was a clear-cut pattern within the data: adults who attend charismatic and non-denominational (Protestant) churches emerged at the top of the continuum, while those attending Catholic or mainline churches ranked at the bottom.

 Comments
The Charismatics need to get their house in order and clean up their act by living and preaching according to the word of God, and the Evangelicals need to stop denying the truth and the bible and get the power of the Spirit in their lives.
There is certainly false doctrine amongst the Charismatics, the prosperity teaching on the last decade has had its excesses, I have witnessed this in America, a cursory study of the bible would be sufficient to see through these excesses.
Sound biblical teaching and the power of the Spirit are necessary in this age for the church to effectively witness to the world.

That is, they obey the spirit of charismaticism rather than the spirit of God.

In regard to communion and mission, the charismatics live and wish to live an "ecclesial" experience of service.

The term Gifts of the Holy Spirit normally refers to these; (2) charismatic graces - these are aimed at some benefit for the community, not directly for the sanctification of the recipient.
As we said above, there have been cases where charismatics have been cursing God, without knowing what they were doing.
The rule is wise - there are cases where persons who knew the needed languages went to a charismatic gathering - they found some did praise God well, while others cursed Him.

Barrett and Johnson call themselves Charismatic, part of the Holy Spirit movement in old-line denominations, and their estimate that the related Pentecostal and Charismatic movements encompass 524 million believers will be one of their work's more controversial statistics.
He also notes increases in the similar Charismatics in traditional denominations, and "Neo-Charismatics" in independent churches.
Another global trend that Barrett's encyclopedia describes is the rise of Pentecostals, who believe in receipt of "gifts" of the Holy Spirit, including speaking in tongues.

Note that I grew up in an "independent" church in Ottawa, Canada that essentially holds to the non-charismatic stance, spent 1993-1996 at a (not highly charismatic) Pentecostal church in Toronto, and most recently am at a Baptist church in Texas.
A charismatic is someone who holds to the doctrine that the above list of gifts
At the other end of the spectrum lie such groups as Baptists, who hold to the doctrine that these gifts were intended for a particular time early in the history of the Church, but that that time has passed, and that the charismatics are just fooling themselves when they practice so-called "gifts."

 Whither Lutheran Charismatics?
But in the early 1980s, Lutheran charismatics were hitting their stride, poised to reshape Lutheran church life and looking for all the world like they would be a factor to reckon with inside of their denominations.
Like most mainline-Protestant charismatics, charismatic Lutherans are borrowing from Pentecostalist, non-denominational, Catholic and Orthodox sources.
They've already concluded that the only way to fully pursue their way of living the faith is by leaving their denomination.

Christian History Corner: Do Non-Charismatics "Do" Holy Spirit Baptism? - Christianity Today Magazine
The truth is, some of the most prominent, influential leaders and groups in the evangelical lineage have yearned for, attained, and taught a transformative, post-conversion experience identified with the Holy Spirit.
Some secular commentators have found this growth menacing—the burgeoning of yet another potentially violent, reactionary religious group.
None even dwelled on the Spirit's work of sanctification (Christian holiness or "fruit of the Spirit")—long the theme of the Wesleyans and arguably the primary focus of scriptural and traditional teaching on the Spirit.

We will not only cite the errors rampant in these teachings, but also offer sound Biblical exposition as to why these teachings are not part of orthodox Christianity.
Videos and cassette teachings are offered on every front by self-proclaimed Apostles and Prophets and until quite recently there has been little backlash against this foolishness by the Body of Christ at large.

While they do have love songs, they're not emo (they're not punk enough to be emo- these guys can get girls- they're good looking and sing sensitive songs- the girls love them!) I'd say they're a hard-alternative band (the kind of band corporations that don't know what the fuck they're talking about sometimes label 'metal').
