The Holy Spirit's operations both individually and collectively (in the Church) are often misunderstood, especially in recent Protestant theology, where "having the Holy Spirit" is synonymous with an adrenaline rush.
Just because spiritual gifts have been mistreated by certain denominations does not mean we should abandon them, or that the Church has ever ceased having these charisms.
I would bet that in America the secular holiday Mother's day is more celebrated within churches than is the feast actually celebrating the birthday of the Church!
